Losing Ground - mix thoughts?

This sounds ok on 3 out of my 4 headphones, sounds ok on Mixcubes...and sounds ok on Yamaha hs8's...in my room. How does it sound for you?

    No criticism here.
Sounding solid on my Bose cans.
Might pan the guitar off a bit during the vocal; just me.
I'd print it and move on to the next tune.

    Thanks a lot everyone.

One thing...does anyone have a good strategy for helping the licks in the tune to kind of stand out or have their own space more? Same thing with the vocals...a lot of the vocal sections are close miked and almost whispered...but then there's parts with more high volume singing (I tried to level out both)...how do I make the vocal have more space?

Is it a case of finding the frequency with the most character and cutting that frequency on all other instruments?

    Thanks Leadfoot.

I ducked some of the rhythm around the licks. Did the same for the vocal overall...but only a small amount.

I really like this song a lot!  Besides sounding good on my system, the arrangement really impresses me.  Keep em coming.

Re: Losing Ground - mix thoughts? 2018/05/07 05:03:05 (permalink)
Thanks Lynn. I feel like it's a bit cluttered. But I'm almost finished recording a new song and this time I tried to pay close attention to the arrangement right from the start. Usually I start with a chord sequence and just record bits on top until I think it's finished, without too much idea of what I'll do with each part in the mix. The whole way through the recording process I've got everything in mono right down the middle - I think this inhibits the performance of subsequent takes because you're recording into a mono mess of parts...I sing in a guesswork way without monitoring my voice and just generally bludgeon my way through.

This new song I did a basic mix of each thing as I recorded it...and even tracked bits with a view to future eq. I also panned them where I had them in mind to be. This made recording the next part easier...easier to hear what I was recording and easier to execute the part. So I hope the next one kind of advances me in mixing skill.
