Lost For You - RnB Pop (Feedback needed!)
Hi All, I reworked an old song I had cowritten with a mate years ago, since Im putting together a collection of songs at the moment It was originally acoustic but decided to go more RnB with this version. Again can you point to any weak spots, changes, suggestions, etc https://soundcloud.com/ci...vern/lfy-07nov/s-BMObc Thanks, Cian

Very pro track here Cian. Mix is very clean with some tasty little elements gliding in and out. The only nit I can think of is on your very first transition into the falsetto. I was thinking when I first heard it, that perhaps the other transitions might be same so as to add a little character or intimacy. Nope....just that one. The rest are nicely done. Very minor nit on an otherwise very well done track.

I like it a lot. I think overall the vocals need to come up as well as the percussion. Maybe the snare is too hot. I just have to reach for the vocals (bkg included) a bit.

Thanks Randy,Rimshot, Kane. The vocals are probably getting buried because of the other instruments taking up too much room. Ive made a few tweak above from above anyway. Any elements distract you is this too overproduced? https://soundcloud.com/ci...ern/lost-for-you-24oct Cian

You have a very nice, evocative voice! And you did an excellent job of putting it in the mix just right. I doubt Abbey Road Studios could've done it any better. Cheers!

Cian, I really like this track. Its a pop ballad/torch number, with a piano in the center and a very expressive & distinctive vocal. The backing vocals are very good. It may be just me (I'm from the deep south/US), but I am having trouble understanding the lyrics. Also the bass snare drum part is metronomic/ repetitive to me. But I have heard more than a few hit records with similar drum parts, so that may not be a problem for this type of track at all. All in all, good stuff. Cheers, Bert

Really nice piece, great melody and I'm a sucker for great bg vocals. Love your voice! I can't think of a thing I'd change. Love how the piano wanders about. Just wow, great song!

Top vocal works once again. Other than changing some of the synth sounds for better quality ones, there is nothing that I can say to improve this. Really cool track. thumbs up

Hey, Cian, This is a really great modern pop song with a cool electro/RNB vibe! I love the soulful vocals and harmonies, and the instrumental performances really shine throughout the clear, fresh sounding mix. Your voice seems to get better every time I hear one of your songs, and the writing is always pro quality! Great stuff, my friend! Bob

Well folks, thanks for your feedback. I have tweaked a newer version if you wish to follow on; https://soundcloud.com/cian-mcgovern/lost-for-you-30oct/s-4Mlr6 Ekowitch - Great point and a very true statement. its knowing the note not to play as opposed what to play. In this version it should be less muddled. Vanessa - Too Kind. close but not there yet! Bert - My friend wrote the lyrics, the theme of the song can be felt but if I was asked to break it down I couldnt. The bass and drums are like that, but Im happy to have them for that type of genre. Im sure the samples could be better, but happy with that direction. Kevin/Daryl - I will admit backing vox and adlibs are my strong points, but I have many points that are very weak, such as structurally solid basslines! Markus/Leizer - Muchas gracias Hi Guss, is that intro synth really that toylike and bad? Thanks for input. Bob as always, thats for dropping on on this. Cian

Love it. You are good! I would recommend throwing it thru ozone 6 with some eq matching using a "sam smith stay with me"" as source. Trust me it will open it up. Its very close, just needs a little middle fill in some "slightly too basic" / empty instrument parts and some good mastering. Really like it. Ill do it for you if you don't have ozone

Such quality, as usual. Very well mixed and I like all of the upper register elements, but I'd vote for turning down your bass a little. I know the genre requires a punchy bass, but it's kind of drowning out your vocals and background vocals, which are pretty darn excellent, actually. cheers, -Tom

Papacucko, thank you. I have ozone 4 and have put this one through it below with some tweaks, was a bit lazy on the mastering of the last one! Im more interested what you meant by the basic/lacking instrumentation, verse2?? Tom, not sure if the bass is fixed in this version. Im dealing with an untreated room which is a culprit in this sort of thing. Thanks mate https://soundcloud.com/ci...lost-for-you-1/s-MvQx1

Cian, I re-listened to this track. In the latest mix, the lyrics are more intelligible and they have the language of the heart. The chorus/hook really grabs me. You've really got something , here. The strong, soulful qu ality of the vocals overwelhms any crits of the rythm part. This song deserves to be heard. Cheers, Bert

revised link doesn't work so I listened to the first link. super nice vocal work and vocal harmonies. In a major studio they would do some vocal pitch tuning, I don't know if you did or not, but sounds like you did not. Vocal harmony sound in the chorus is really great. The mix is very good, and the vibe is felt strong. A major studio would give the parts more punch somehow, which is probably not possible in Sonar, I can't explain how. Song deserves major studio production, it's that good. nice one

Thanks Mike, I think it is a strong song and your right there is another 10% to be got out of this by making it punch and clearer and you could definitely get close with sonar, Im not quite there yet. The studios have better compressors and effects and most of all analog gear which adds a sparkle and glue that I reckon digital can never really emulate. Cian

Great job on this one Cian. I think the higher vocal gives this one the sound that is probably cutting edge compared to others similar in the genre or close IMHO. I don't know , they say white boys can't jump but I believe you can. This has that distinctive R&B feel to it...it has that vibe that a lot of people like to hear!!

This is really a beautiful number Cian. You have done a great job on this. The instrumentation and especially the vocals are very well done. The only nit-pick that I would have is the percussion. To my unprofessional ears, they sound a bit synth or mechanical. What were you using for the drums? Drums have been one of my major nemesis in putting together my stuff. However, that is a small point given the overall good sound of the song. Nice one!

Guys, Tim, how are you? Yes the most memorable thing after the end of this song is the high vocal. Maybe if they never see my face they might think that I aint white! Shawn, thats the kinda feedback I want. good to hear. I usually do start my songs off minimilistic which can often bore the listener pretty quickly. Ohgrant, many thanks. Freddie. Well to put it straight the percussion is mechanical and this genre typically has that. however maybe it is too mechanical. Its a question I would like others answer too, I mean I dont want to do a drum loop cos I want each percussion hit to fit how I want it and assuming any other top end producer would make custom beats to songs how to they do it without it sounding mechanical? other inputs Cian PS - The france terrorist attacks are a terrible atrocity.
