Lost VST Sounds

I am running Sonar Pro on Win7. It has been working beautifully until I let my grandkids have a 'play' with my midi keyboard. As kids will, they pushed every button on the keyboard. That's not usually a problem. But, now, when I load a VST instrument, no instruments are loaded with it. For example, when loading Real Guitar, a message on the interface says 'guitars not found'. I have rescanned all VST's but still no luck. If I load a project created prior to the kids intervention, I can still get sounds out of the VST's in that project. If starting a new project and loading the same VSTs, no sound! Sonar still receives midi signals as I can see the meters rise and fall when playing the VST. Also, when playing a General Midi instrument, the output sound works as it should. I am stumped and would appreciate any advice (except advice about not letting grandchildren loose on a midi keyboard!)

Hi. I do not think that your MIDI keyboard should have anything to do with your vst's presets (but I could be wrong). Maybe there is some way to reset your MIDI keyboard to factory default? It could maybe be something like that.
It is always very helpful to include your specs in your signature. (CPU, RAM, audio / MIDI interface, etc.)
    Best of luck.

Thanks Ken. Yes, I tried the reset of the keyboard and also struggle to see a relationship between the keyboard and VSTi's. I uninstalled Real Guitar and re-installed it but the same problem arises - no sounds. Sounds do happen in that VSTi if I load an old project that used the VSTi. I can even use the keyboard to record extra chords into the existing track. But, if trying to add another iteration of Real Guitar - no sounds! I'm lost with this one!

It sounds like a routing issue. Do you see your MIDI keyboard under MIDI devices, in Preferences (P)?
How is your MIDI keyboard connected? Do you have the latest drivers for it?

Did you reset plugs first before the rescan?  It's been known to make a difference.

Thank you Ken and JonD. Midi devices shows the keyboard correctly. The keyboard is attached via midi cable to the Audiophile card. As I say, with an old project, Sonar recognizes the keyboard and still allows recording into previously loaded VSTi's. So, the keyboard works and the VSTi's obviously still work in old projects. JonD, I did do the reset first followed by the rescan but still no luck.

At a loss for anything I can think of I toss out this.. MIDI channel?
DO you use omni? of channel 1. They might have reset the keyboard to send on a different channel?

But you saying the VST shows there's no instrument loaded at all? and none are available from the load instument menu? Did you ever creat a custom pre set?

Hello Johnny V. Good suggestion. I have my keyboard transmitting on Channel 1 but have tried all 16 channels with no success. The only VSTi that shows no instrument loaded is Real Guitar. Something like Nexus shows all the presets and seems to change them when selected but still no sounds.

What happens if you load an old project, and try to add a new VST instrument?  If it plays back okay, then that would suggest your problem is the template for new projects  (Normal, or whatever you use) is corrupted.

Also, try deleting aud.ini and let it get recreated.

Could there be a corrupt file in your Real Guitar (download)? Maybe try to download again?
Do you have the latest drivers for your audio interface?

The only relationship I can imagine behind a keyboard command and a change in the behavior of softsynths would be if some kind of bank/patch change was sent. So your synths are looking for instruments in the wrong bank. If your keyboard has bank selection buttons or controls that can be mapped to that function I would look there.

I believe that this could be the culprit in this case.
I am able to send commands (more than my knowledge of these things) from my M-Audio Radium 49 (never used it), but it seems reasonable to think is those directions that are at fault.

JohnD - When loading an old project and adding a new VSTi, the new VSTi does not play back. I can add a recording to the existing VSTi.
Slartabartfast - I would have thought doing a factory reset would have corrected any issues with bank change/patch change info, although your suggestion is quite logical.
Ken - I have checked a new installation of Real Guitar on another PC and it works fine.
So, still at a loss. I am considering a complete re-intsall of Sonar and all VSTi's, as painful as that would be but I have this nagging thought that the problem could still exist after that because the issue may be hardware based rather than software based.
Thank you all for your great suggestions so far.

Try another midi cable or USB port (If that's how it receives midi).  If that doesn't help --

Take your HW keyboard out of the equation.  Unplug the midi/USB cable temporarily (Whatever cable is transmitting midi to the PC).  Reboot your system, then start Sonar.

Load up a VSTi with an onscreen keyboard (ie. CW Sound Center).  Using the onscreen keyboard, does it make a sound?

If so, then the HW keyboard and/or it's connection is likely causing the issue.  If not, I'd proceed with the clean install of Sonar.

(I really don't think reinstalling your VSTs will make a difference).

If you've got old projects working you're a long way from reinstalling Sonar. In any case unless you delete all the necessary registry keys you will Bly repeat the current installation which we presume the re installation is supposed to fix.
Do you see activity in the channel meters? Midi and audio tracks and busses.

If there is absolutely no activity or only in the MIDI track then. These things will point to where there may be a routing error.

If i switch off / on one my keyboard controller, the current active VST will be shut to zero volume. And if I save it, it will remain no sound. Took me a while to figure that one.

Unrelated, I'm also currently experiencing no sound when adding a new soft synth track - only for Kontakt player.. might have to do with the add soft synth options, I'm going to check that out soon.

Agreed, which is why I suggested a clean reinstall of Sonar.

Personally, I'd try a system restore first (to a point before the problem started).  If not possible, or it doesn't work, then do the clean reinstall of Sonar.  Here's a post with instructions for X3:

This sounds more & more like a routing problem, especially if you see audio  being triggered.

Are the vsti tracks routed to busses? could you describe your bus structure

So a reset of the keyboard does not solve the problem. Still could be a stuck controller switch on the keyboard that is sending a message when it is connected. You could download MidiOx and find out exactly what is being sent by the keyboard, or look in the event list to see if there are events there that do not belong. Or the grandchildren playing with the keyboard could be a coincidence/red herring. Or something has been changed in your setup that persists across a restart of Sonar. Are your VST's capable of retaining settings after they are not in use? Open the synth properties and see what they are showing. Are you opening new projects using a template that might have been altered? Try opening without a template.

Bristol_Jonesey - It certainly does sound like a routing problem, I agree, but, on the surface, everything looks the same as it did prior to the problem. If I look at the routing of older projects, they look the same as those in a newly created project. The difference is, the VSTi's work in the older projects but no the new ones. The VSTi's are not routed to busses.
Slartabartfast - I have been using MidiOx to see what is happening and all appears to be OK. The events it reports match up to what ever it is I am inputting on the keyboard. The issue applies to every VSTi that I have so it appears to be a global issue rather than VSTi specific. I do not use templates to start new projects.
