Lots of click noise of audio playback

Help needed, thanks!

Recently, I updated my Sonar to Sonar 7 and keep on recording midi files to audio with it.
It is fine during the recording, but the audio playback has a lot of 'click' noise.

So I bought a new PC with doble CPU and changed the buffer to 1024k.
The click noise remain the same!

I wonder if anyone is able to help?

possibly... you might want to post again in the MC or sonar forum since this is a platform specific issue.

when you repost... include the computer name, RAM, speed, processor, operating system, and soundcard, in your post.

Are you getting dropouts where the transport stops or just clicks ? Could be a number of things.
    1. Do you have a soundblaster card with the "what you hear" selected to record in it's control panel so the metronome is being recorded ?
    2. Got a trial plugin that want's you to buy a real license ?
    3. Sample rate clock problems when using two different sound card with no clock connection between them ?
    4. Got somthing hooked up via a digital audio connection (SPDIF, ADAT, etc) and both are set to internal clock ?
    5. If that's not it... have you tried another driver type ? ASIO, WDM ?

That may be a clocking problem. If you're recording the audio over S/PDIF, make sure you've specified S/PDIF as the clock source in your ASIO control panel.

All else is in doubt, so this is the truth I cling to.

    Sound Card: Realtek HD Audio
    Driver Mode: WDK

the sound card is not ideal for recording with cake. you can try resetting the driver to each of the 3 driver modes and run the wave profiler again after each change. see if any one works better for you. ideally you want to run ASIO drivers but you may not be able to do so with the realtek card.

Getting a decent soundcard (pro-quality) will solve the problems and allow you to run the ASIO drivers.

Some people have success (to one degree or another) by installing asio4all... it's available on the net (for free I think) google it.

Maybe a plug-in(s) is clipping? If you mute the FX bins do you still get the clicking noise?

I did not use FX, so I have no bin to mute.

    Thanks!

Its your sound card and its lack of drivers mosyt likely. Onboard cards are not optimal for audio recoridng. A dedicated audio card will help you

S/PDIF is how you record a digital source, such as a hardware synthesizer. But you can disregard my comment; I don't even know if S/PDIF is an option with a Realtek interface.

Dave there is an out option... for home cinema set.. errm it's an optional face plate most of the time, or included on a laptop rarely perhaps.. same with the AWE32 one back in the mists of time

    Good cards....

I use the Focusrite Saffire ($260 at GC) it does audio & midi lots of features.... check Beagle's personal site (look for beagle in MC forums) he has a page set up that allows you to compare the various cards at a glance....and in different price ranges.

With a good card, you might pay a little bit more than you think you should pay for a sound card... but trust me when I say.....the soundcard is the heart of your system..... don't skimp and try to save a few bucks on a cheap card....get one that will do the job.

Another place to check for cards that work..... look in the signatures of the experienced users here. What you see posted there is what we are using in our personal studios, and we tell what we use, because it works.

    Sound Card: Realtek HD Audio
    Driver Mode: WDK

Is the clicking rhythmic, like the sound of a playing card against bicycle spokes? Not in time to the music.
This is typical behavior with a Realtek type sound card and the WDM (WDK) driver mode. The card simply cannot keep up.
Try switching your driver mode to MME. Restart Sonar.
Adjusting the Buffer Size slider to the safe side should reduce or eliminate the clicking. This will come at the cost of dramatically increased latency.
    ASIO4All, suggested earlier may help.
As far as a decent sound card, there are many. Check the signatures of some of the people here to see what we are using.
What is fine for one of us, may not meet your needs, so check around to see what is available.
This is an important part of your DAW, so do some research, and don't rush into buying something before you are sure it will work for what you want to do.

RE: Lots of click noise of audio playback- advice accepted 2008/12/13 10:59:01 (permalink)
    Thank you all, guys,

    Advice accepted, problem solved.

I bought a Line 6 UX8, $999, the 2nd most expensive card in the store.

I will report to you, what I may learn from this card.

By the way, I found what S/FDIf is. I dont have such devices. Thanks, too.
