Lots of monitoring, re-amping and recording questions

Lots of questions on behalf of a non-Sonar-using friend of mine, so I'll just list them rapid-fire style.  Is it possible to monitor with effects and record clean?  Does this require some sort of effects insert?  The Q+A says that the VS-20 can be used to re-amp effects, how is that done?  I'm just trying to see if this can be done in DAWs without VST support, like Studio One Artist or Pro Tools 9 or Logic.

Also, while I'm at it, I'm just assuming that it's well-integrated with X1, which I'll be using when I go to buy one of these myself.  Do I need to go through ACT learning for the control surface, or does X1 recognize it and just run with it instantly?

All you have to do is answer a few questions there's and there's a pretty good chance two of these things are going to be bought.  I guess nobody wants my money.

Don't worry, Cakewalk, I'll be your sales guy. I ordered a VS-20 from UniqueSquared last night and I'll try it out and let my buddy try it out with Studio One Artist.  If he likes it, he'll get one too.  NO THANKS TO YOU!

OK, to answer my own questions:

Everything works great with any DAW compatible with the ASIO standard except for the transport controls/control surface.

This is now my personal "I love the VS-20!" thread.  And as such, I just want to point out that this thing is compatible with Skype and Ventrilo for voice chat (I use both for Starcraft II depending on who I'm playing with), and everyone I've talked to has remarked how nice my headset is.  Except it's not a headset, it's the built-in mics on the VS-20.  The fun comes when I forget to turn off the COSM effects and I get a nice chorused effect to my voice, or I've turned on the pitch shift/correction effects.  It's amusing to play with, as well as making my cheapy guitar sound amazing.

The effects on this thing are astounding, I just want to point that out.  Anybody looking to get a good chorus, distortion, compression, or phase sound into your DAW would do well with one of these.
