No, you don't necessarily have to disable the onboard sound card.
Let me see if I can find the item...
Okay, Control Panel>Sounds and Audio Devices>Sounds>Sound Scheme>select no sounds.
This will prevent things like "You've Got Mail" or other sounds that the computer might make, from interupting recording or playback, robbing the CPU of resources and potentially making noise.
If the computer is downloading updates for one of your programs, this could also cause loss of processor power and could lead to noise or total audio dropouts.
The CPU reading while recording or playback will vary with the computer model, RAM, etc. Typically for me, with 4-10 audio tracks going and maybe 2 or 3 audio effects or soft synths, the max CPU usage it reports is in the 25-30% range.
When doing serious recording, I get off the internet, disable my modem, turn off the virus scan and any other program that might steal RAM.
