Love has Blossomed

I admit it. I stand in front of you and confess I love Sonar Platinum!

I have been comparing it with Studio One 3 and Samplitude Pro X2 and though each are very nice Sonar simply does everything I ask of it. It never talks back or gives me a hard time. Its at my beck and call 24 hours a day and cheerfully just works. With all the improvements its as if I have a new person... ah thing ah DAW. X3 was great but Platinum kills it.

I don't know what the Bakers have done internally to it but whatever it was it certainly has made it one heck of a great DAW.

Ahem . . . Well . . . Over here in Australia the government is still doing battle over same sex marriages, I don't think we are quite ready for this

I am pretty happy myself with Sonar Platinum, I spend 90% of my time in Sonar, a bit of doodling in REAPER, sometimes have a look around at what else is happening, sometimes wish Platinum had some of the REAPER things and visa versa, but there must be a reason why I spend the majority of my time in Sonar, and well it just feels comfortable, really since X3, except for a few shaky moments, it's been no turning back. As good as X3 was, after Platinum . . . well it's just forward and onward.

I have to admit that I'm not as passionate about Sonar as I was in X3. Please don't misunderstand, I love the new Control Bar, new Sends module in CV, Virtual Keyboard, etc. introduced this year. What I'm not happy about is that each monthly update seems to introduce a new bug. Although I didn't have the chance to notice it myself (because I was busy around that time), Foxboro introduced one or two Take lane issues (that affect my workflow) according to the Gloucester Update document, and as some of you may know, Glousester introduced a minor bug to the Z key (releasing it after holding it down fails to disable the magnifying glass icon), which is still present in Hopkinton. Not to mention the Control Bar module order issue, Drum Map issue, etc. introduced earlier this year. So, the most recent version of Sonar that works best for me is Everett Update 1.

The change in me is also due to my recent trial of S1v3 (Studio One 3) demo. For me, Sonar is a full-fledged DAW with a large number of bugs, while S1 is a bloat-free, easier-to-use DAW with much less bugs (in fact, I only encountered a couple of bugs in v2, one of which was a showstopper that made me ditch the program. But it seems to have been fixed in v3). S1 fits better in my laptop screen and v3's GUI looks more beautiful to my eyes. Sonar's time-stretch algorithms (iZotope Radius algorithms) are better than those in S1. S1's track layer design is a lot better than Sonar's Take lanes, but S1 doesn't have screensets, percentage-based MIDI note/velocity randomize feature, etc. It's hard to choose between the two, so I'll probably use both (but mainly Sonar, at least for a while).

Tak T.

What I'm not happy about is that each monthly update seems to introduce a new bug.

I hate to say I agree. Take the new start screen for instance. There are a LOT of regression issues with it. The developer didn't accomdate for special characters anywhere it seems, and performance when starting up Sonar didn't seem to be a consideration either (I.e. putting internet downloads in it's own seperate process, and maybe not lazy loading files and thumbnails tbc). If your project has not been loaded and you don't have a thumbnail it just shows a black one, rather than something more polished. It seems there are issues with being offline and internet access may go through a port that could be blocked by a firewall (I.e. not port 80)...maybe.

For a reasonably experienced Dev all this should have been obvious from the start. It might be though that the design specs were not good enough (developer straightjacketed), or there was a hard deadline to live up to. QA should have easily picked this up on these issues as well (these aren't difficult bugs to find). Pick any one of these I can't speculate which one of these is true (oh all right .. I will guess hard deadline, for my sins).

Where does it leave us? Well we can easily turn it off (at least that was accommodated for, glad that happened!) however these regression issues are clearly going to take some time to resolve. So will Cakewalk resolve all the regression issues here? Or will they only fix some of them (due to deadlines and lack of time),leaving more bugs floating around we need to workaround with, as has been the case in the past (we still have a backlog).

Eventually it will all be fixed.. but will it? If functionality keeps being introduced with regression bugs it's just whack a mole. I crumble with fear how many regression issues will be introduced with the forthcoming audio enhancements, that's far more complex than the start screen.

I fear the old lessons learned from the Roland days are being forgotten about.

There will be arguements by others that a balance has to be maintained here, but it's already far too much pivoted to one side. Has been for years.

I will be sticking with Gloucester for a while...

And another thing.I was writing even before this was released that it should be tested for offline and performance. As there is another bug whereby the start screen comes up after the project was loaded I figure there was little time for it.

Please stop releasing half baked functionality, Rapture Pro should have been a lesson.

Rant out :)

Bapsi, the day I go on a public forum and, without a hint of irony or satire, post a public proclamation that I am 'in love' with a computer program, please email me immediately and tell me to get a grip.

That is, of course, providing I haven't already died of embarrassment.

For the record, I've been a big fan of Cakewalk and many of its products since I first dipped a toe into the pond of digital recording with Guitar Tracks 2. I like the software, I respect the developers, and for the most part I enjoy the company and advice to be found in these forums.

As it happens, I have similar views regarding other brands and types of software. Such 'emotions' seem perfectly normal and rational to me.

In my humble opinion however, it just doesn't seem too normal or rational, healthy even, to express an epithet like "Love has blossomed" in respect of a computer program. Surely, feeling such as these should be reserved for other human beings, a favourite pet, or maybe one's country.....
