I'm not sure if it's the heavy delay or not but it sounded like there were some timing issues occasionally that needed to be tightened up.

This is a very, very good first effort, but I'm not sure I'm buying that. Really nice melody with really sweet playing that has a very fresh, very innocent quality to it, I hope that's what you were going for. :)
The bass and drums sit almost perfectly in the mix, it's just great. Yeah, a few timing issues, and at least one spot with the bass, but heck, I'd be proud as hell of this work just as it is. Thanks!

Very good stuff here Mike and it was very pleasant/soothing on my H-phones....nice dreamscape. Reminded me of the style of a Chet Atkins album I have (C.G.P).....happens to be one of my favorites.
Overall, this is an excellent first effort and you've done a very good job playing/mixing etc...only thing I thought might help with the clarity of the mix is to slightly reduce the delay/verb on the main guitar melody. The harmony parts work very well and does complete this tune nicely.
Well done Mike, and would love to hear more stuff from you.

Hey kevinwal: Thanks so much for the comments and taking the time to listen. Just to clarify: I didn't mean to imply that this was the very first track I had ever recorded. It is the very first track I've recorded where I felt it was close enough in quality that I could actually post it online and ask for critiques recognizing that it still needed some work. And yes "very fresh, very innocent quality" is exactly what I'm going for so Thanks again. PS: for the record: I think the first track I ever recorded was ping-ponged on a cassette player while I was working in Saudi Arabia in 1975. Stopped recording in 1979 and restarted just about the time the Sonar "X" series came out.

Hi Mesh. Thanks so much for the listen and comments. I hear you on the delay/verb and I've been considering what I could do to improve it. I recently saw a technique where a delay was side-chained and an expander was used so that when an instrument was playing there was very little delay volume but when the phrase ended the delay came into play. I think I going to try that. I like this song with this much delay and verb but I agree with you that it should probably be cleaned up just a bit. Love Chet Atkins...and several other jazz guitarists (Bill Frisell and Pat Metheny are a couple of my favorites). Thanks again...your posting is very helpful.

Some beautiful guitar tones in this track. I don't think the drums add anything to this to be honest. Just seems like they don't provide any groove and for me they kind of distract from the real nice flow of this song. I if you haven't had the chance yet, take a listen to some of James Griffiths and Larry Hansens stuff from the Slow Marching Band songs they used to do around here. Larry's excellent on alot of the percussion they used, and some of the material is similar to what you've got going on here. Very nice recording of the guitars and real sweet performances.

+1 to the above.. I really like your playing, a lot. The main melody and additional parts work well together.
Mix-wise I think the side-chain delay technique is worth a try just for some clean up. I don't think the drums are bad, but Dan's suggestion to use percussion instead; e.g., congas, shaker, etc., might even fit better. I would also replace the bass patch with something "rounder", maybe even an acoustic bass patch if you have one.

Guitars sound really great, no doubt. Fantastic first effort!
the bass is the problem for me. In what could pass for your chorus section, the bass starts doing a country style move,1 to a lower 5, 1 to a lower 5. I dunno, I just thought some of those notes weren't well chosen or didn't seem to support your melody at that point. I'd agree to a warmer sound if you can manage it on your bass, the roundwounds are kindy sproingy for your awesome mellow guitars.
just my .02. holy cow, really great guitar playing, I thought of Chet as well.
