Luxuary I tell ya! Luxuary!..

Currently forced to use 'Tools 9 on a project. Let me tell those of you who haven't ventured beyond the Sonar domain before - use PT for a few hours and start appreciating how spoilt us Sonar users are with offline bounce, track freeze etc. When you have to export a 10 minute midi keyboard drone in REAL TIME you start wondering WHY oh WHY is this damned DAW so popular?!?!?! I think they made a deal with the big studios to waste a maximum amount of time so they can bill more ;O)

    LOL well put!

For our use X1 is sort of ideal.

I can see though where PT has a need but not for just recording. There are much better alternatives. For massive networking and processing in a central area PT is hard to beat. For studio use its not so impressive.

I was a grunt at a video production house for a while and everything was Avid. All the producers, editors pretty much anyone who put their hands on a computer HATED it. All of it.

I admit I don't have a lot of experience with other DAWs, but from what I've seen...I'm not impressed.  I think the main advantage of the big studio ProTools systems is the hardware integration and stability.  But pretty much all the rest are more a matter of personal taste than anything.

What I've always loved about Sonar is its tight MIDI integration.  Cakewalk started out as the leading MIDI sequencer, and to this day it's still the best.  For my style of composing and recording music, there is simply nothing better.

Of course, as a long-time Cakewalk user I'm biased.  Even though X1 is a major change, it's still familiar enough to get around while learning the new layout and features.  There are lots of things I LOVE about X1, and a few things that have me scratching my head, at times.  But usually, with a little due diligence, I discover there's an even better way to do what I need to do.  It doesn't hurt that I also got the VS-700 at the same time (which, for all its little quirks, I still highly recommend.  Very cool stuff!).

    No, I don't work for Cakewalk.  ;)

My guitar player was over a few weeks back.
He's a huge Mac/Pro Tools fan. As a matter of fact that's where I got my version of PT from.
He had a lite version of 8 that came with an interface he bought and he gave it to me.
I used it for the upgrade path.

Now I totally understand why he likes Mac so much.
After playing around with it over the last few months I know I will be going Mac soon.

    As for PT, it's ok.
Slightly over rated and definitely over priced but ok.

So anyway, I go over his house Thursday night supposedly to lay down some drum tracks.
    Well surprise, surprise.
I walk into his studio and he was having a little trouble understanding the install process for Sonar X1d-e.

He said after watching me work in X1 and bounce down some tracks to send him home with the other day he had to get it.
That and he really likes the new look of X1. It looks more professional he said.
Not to mention the price of plug-ins.

    Now we're both on PT9 and X1d-e.
He's getting PT10 to keep with the upgrade pricing.
I'm good with PT9 for now but will upgrade when and if PT goes 64bit and gets it stable.

I'm much more comfortable in Sonar but it can never be bad to know how to use a few different tools.

Hi LJB....you are in late.....i have posted my exp with Protools many time ago and how my clients begin to choose the Sonar prjs,but......it's a waste of time. For ex the last Protools conquest? Clip Gain!!!! I continue to think and choose with my head rather than with advertising.Best Roby.

Hi Roby, it's just such a reminder every time I have to use PT.

Granted, it IS stable as a recording platform - that's why I have it on my laptop - it's great for live recordings - but other than that, it's my most expensive plugin! (I use it for fixing performances).

Having said all that, it's not THAT much more stable than X1, by the way!

Yep,  I have had the same experience....

I compose in Sonar and my clients mix in Protools.  I have become very close friends with the mixers on these projects.  Let's face it.. Protools does a very good job of mixing and mixing to picture.

But i have sat thru many, many protools crashes and lock-ups.  And it appears to me that Sonar is more stable even in the past when a version was not working so well (X1, X1b.).  Many times it just depends on the circumstances.

Sonar handles 64 bit soft-synth plugins and renders quickly (not in real time).  I can not see how i could be better off working in Protools.

Now if Staff View was as good as Protools,  I'd be ecstatic!

As LJB said, PT is a stable recording platform. But so is SONAR. With a proper soundcard it can record live performances with high reliability. I've used SONAR for years to make critical recordings and I have never had anything bad to say about stability as a tape machine. It's one of the best working areas in SONAR.
