Lyrical Distortion Guitar Sample Libraries

[EDIT: I strongly DO NOT recommend buying Lyrical Distortion sample libraries. Research this developer at this forum and KVR and ask posters who have purchased from them about their experiences from the quality of the libraries to customer support for the various reasons why. Unfortunately, when  I created this thread, I wanted people to know about the group buy and didn't know enough about this developer's products and practices.]

Thanks for the links, Peter.  I've been checking this out and I am very tempted...  $99 is a killer deal.

    Hi Glyn,

I'd be interested in your thoughts on Independence Pro and how it's running on your machine -- I've read some mixed reviews over at KVR on how it runs, although everyone seems happy with the samples; I'd especially like to hear feedback from someone using Win 7, 64 bit. As far as Superior Drummer, I love it and the expansions. Actually, I love just about everything from ToonTrack.

Superior, and hopefully Independence will be waiting for me when I get back to the UK early next week.

First a caveat, I am using Vista 64, not Win 7

I have been using Independence Free since the 64 bit version was released in October. I have not had any problems with it. It seems very stable in Sonar 8.5.3 64bit.  Not only do I like the sounds, but unlike many I like the interface too.

I have Symphonic Orchestra and Jazz Trio download instruments as well as the free set.

Has anyone bought any of Lyrical's sounds? The demos on the site are pretty good, but $19 seems ridiculously inexpensive for a set of professional samples, and this group buy makes them even less expensive, bordering on insanely inexpensive!

So, does anyone have anything they'd like to share about dealing with Lyrical's products? Any actual, hands-on, real-world use?

And of those of you who've used Lyrical's stuff, do you recommend Kontakt or Independence? I have the full Kontakt and Independence Free. There's no note about compatibility issues with Independence Free, but I also think I read something about some scripts for Kontakt.

Hey guys, I currently have just the bare minimum version of Kontakt for this (2.2.4).  Can anyone tell me what important features I may be lacking with such an old version, relevant to a guitar library like LD (or others)?  Thanks.

Hi Huffy, I wish I could answer that one for you, but I'm really not sure. I'm certain that Aaron, the developer behind Lyrical Distortion can answer that question for you. Try PMing him on the KVR forum.

Well, I'm not a member over there and I don't really want to sign up just for that, but hey, it's a moot point now, because I just made my purchase anyway.

But here's the deal - I expressly chose the PayPal option so I wouldn't have to expose my email address and credit info by setting up an account with Lyrical Distortion.  Well, after my purchase, I downloaded the first of ten 604 MB parts (took around 20 minutes).  Well, as I tried to then download part 2, it sent me to a page saying "Whoops!  Your login has expired - Please log in to My Account" (which of course I never set up).  They give you a little "temporary account" so you can download, but apparently 20 minutes is too long for it to handle.  So, come hell or high water, they're going to get my email address, aren't they.  That just burns me.  It's not so much the email address per se, it's the fact that they gave me a choice, even comparing the convenience of using PayPal, vs. setting up an account with LD.

So I just sent them a hot little email via their Contact Us page, using an alternate email of mine (just out of principle), asking how I can go about getting the rest of my purchase.  I'll let you know what their response is.

Also, before I made my purchase, the Group Buy figure stood at 170.  And... it's still at 170, and it's been probably more than an hour after I bought mine.  Wouldn't seeing a 171, 172, 173... entice more people to put it to 175 and get us those other 3 libraries?  Why no updated figure yet, on this the last day?

Okay, no sooner did I post my previous message, than I had received an email from Aaron himself at LD, telling me an account had been set up automatically using info from my PayPal purchase (hmmm, so much for PayPal shielding your actual info from vendors - I thought that was the whole idea...).

Anyway, so now I'm once again downloading the remainder of the 6+ GB initial libraries.  After that (tomorrow, the 16th) will come the additional libraries.  At least that's my understanding at this point.

So, a little turbulence there, but, now moving on.  :)

Oh, and Aaron did assure me that I would've had to have actually subscribed to their newsletter to get emails from them, so that's nice to know.

Edit:  And now I see the figure is up to 172.  (3:56 PM Central Time, U.S.)

Just so everyone knows, the target numbers are different from what they were a week ago (and in the OP).  Here's the current listing on the site:

1 - 99 Lyrical Direct plus 3 ADDITIONAL Select Guitar and Bass libraries
100 - 149 Lyrical Direct plus 9 ADDITIONAL Select Guitar and Bass libraries
150- 174 Lyrical Direct plus 15 ADDITIONAL Select Guitar and Bass libraries
175+ Lyrical Direct plus 18 ADDITIONAL Select Guitar and Bass libraries

    It's now at 172.

Well, I tried to buy this product, but I guess it wasn't meant to be. Apparently, PayPal is the only option for payment and I don't do PayPal. Too bad, it would have been fun and a great value at 99 bucks.

    EDIT:
I wrote to Aaron and he swears you don't need a PayPal account to buy his product. But damned if I can figure out how...

    EDIT #2:
Finally was able to make the purchase, but I had to switch from Firefox to Internet Explorer to do it. Downloads in progress...

    Huffy,
What did you end up getting? Do you like it? Did you get the Kontakt version?

I agree with you about the whole e-mail principle thing. I'd rather not expose any more of myself than is absolutely necessary--but things rarely go as planned. I usually use my "disposable" e-mail account when I'm signing up for something I think I'll never use again.

The LD stuff looks pretty good and sounds pretty good, but if I keep taking advantage of these group buys, I'm going to need to find myself a good 12-step program for recovery. (If I do, I'll see if I can get some sort of "group buy" on it so the rest of you can join me.)

I'm not a big fan of network distribution, at least not for large files. Instant gratification is great for a VST that takes a minute to download. But 6GB takes a while, especially when 177 other people are downloading the same big files.

I started the downloads Saturday evening. Three of the downloads have failed and had to be restarted. A fourth may be corrupt, as its file size is smaller than expected. The Firefox download manager says there are 8 hours remaining for the current file.

At this rate, I should have the full product (less the bonus libraries) sometime Tuesday. Wednesday at the latest.

I'd have gladly paid an extra 20 bucks to get the libraries on disk. The wait time would have been about the same, and I'd have the use of my full internet bandwidth in the meantime.

The initial 6 gb download includes all the different formats - you just extract the one you want after downloading.  (I'm sure glad too, cuz I was in such a rush to throw the item in my cart, I forgot to make sure there wasn't a format box I needed to check!)

As for the quality of any specific sample libraries, I still haven't gotten past the stage of figuring out where best to extract all this stuff, so, I'll have to get back to you on that...

I'm anxious to get the 18 free sample libraries the Group Buy got us (178 buyers as of now).  My account at LD still just has the initial download available - none of the freebies yet.  They did say today was the day they'd be ready though.  I'll just check back later.

Hmm.  I wonder if they might've emailed me a separate download link for the freebies.  I'll check...

Nope.  I'll just log in later at LD.  Btw, I don't know if it means we can choose which 18 libraries, or if it's 18 predetermined ones (out of, I think, 23)...

Well there's the problem right there! If everyone is downloading a 6GB file, no wonder it takes a while and there are problems with file corruption.

Seems it would be much more efficient if you were allowed to choose the format you wanted and just download those files. I would be considerably faster and easier for the end user, it would greatly reduce the bandwidth LD needs for their Web site, and your ISP wouldn't start getting upset every time you downloaded 6GB of files!

That said, the examples sounded good, and I'm interested in hearing/reading what you think of them. I may have missed the group buy, but at $19 each, I can still afford a couple that I like.

Bummer.  FWIW, I've got IE8, and I just tested re-downloading the first 604 MB file, and it's going almost twice as fast today than yesterday - says it'll take about 11 minutes - I'm averaging around 850 KB/sec.

Maybe it's your ISP?  (I'm not well-versed on how all this bandwidth stuff works.)  Also, when you say "download manager" do you mean something separate from the normal thingy that pops up when you, for instance, do a right-click/Save Target As?  Is it like an add-on that you use, that lets you stack up multiple downloads in a queue so you can go to bed?  If so, could that be the issue?

Also FWIW, I do know I got a fast reply from Aaron after submitting my question at the LD site yesterday.  Maybe he can work something out with you, like maybe an alternate download host (client? whatever it's called), or even the disk option you mentioned.  Might be worth a shot.

    Re:Lyrical Distortion GROUP BUY -75% OFF - $450 Worth of Samples for $99 2010/05/16 13:59:11 (permalink)
The cutoff was 11:59 PM Mountain Time, so it's over.

Thanks to your kvr link, I found out that I am downloading files I don't need! So thanks for that, huffy.

Apparently, Kontakt users only need the first 5 files, not all 10. I did not pick up on that from the pdf.

Can anyone who has already downloaded the files confirm the file sizes? The website says they're all 604.47MB, but so far none have been that size. One of them (part 2) is only 248.5MB. I need to know if that one's been truncated.

    Hello Everyone,

I thought I would come in and thank everyone who joined from here.
There are a few I talked to yesterday.
It's always great meeting people, I hope I was able to get things squared away to a responsible level to met your satisfaction.

The Group Buy is technically over, but it is still turned on in the store.
As long as there is a crowd in there with it in their cart, we just can't turn it off on them.
(A few extra sales isn't going to hurt us, and it sure beats angering someone if we turn it off while they're in checkout)
So I imagine it will just quietly linger for much of the day until it dies down.

I'll touch a little about downloading tips.
It's better to download one at a time, then to try getting them all at once. (you would be surprised how many times this is the culprit)
It still takes the same amount of time.
It's also been reported by several users that Download Managers and Download Accelerators can cause corrupt downloads.
If you're experiencing problems with them, I would recommend disabling them.
I can't really add much in regards to browsers, I haven't personally used IE in forever. But I do know they all tested ok.

Thanks again to everyone who joined!
    Feel free to contact us

    Best regards,
    Aaron

That first set of WinRAR archives, called "LyricalDirectMulti.part01", "part02", etc., are each showing 618.981 KB on my hard drive, except for the last, part five, which is 618.786 KB.

As for the other set, with names like "Lyrical_DirectM5b.part01", "part02", etc., those are all 618.981 except for the last, part five, which is 607.636.

Thanks also to Aaron, whose patience allowed me to get in on the group buy. He went to the trouble of emailing step-by-step screenshots, which revealed that my problem was something within Firefox. Switching to IE allowed me to make the purchase.

Aaron, I hope you'll visit us again from time to time. You're sure to have some new fans here after the dust settles.

    Thanks, huffy.

Unfortunately, of the 4 files I've downloaded, none have matched either the site's posted size nor the sizes you have.

Here's what I've got so far (still waiting on part 1, which failed and had to be restarted):

    Part 2 - 619.7MB
    Part 3 - 248.6MB (probably was truncated)
    Part 4 - 609.8MB
    Part 5 - 604.5MB

Jeez, I hope I don't have to start the process all over again. :(

    EDIT:
Whew! That took a while. That's 5 down and 18 to go.

While extracting files, one file (LDi_5_b_1_4.wav) was reported as corrupt. Either the file is corrupt in the rar file, or the rar file was corrupted during download. I do not want to download 3GB of data to find out which. Did anyone else get the same or similar message during extraction?

I've now downloaded and extracted the main product. But I don't see any .nki files. I expected to see some, given that Kontakt was a prerequisite. Did I miss a file or something?

From the KVR thread I learned that two subdirectories should have been created, LDi Samples and LDi Speaker IR, but all I have is the first one, LDi Samples, with 6GB of wave files in it. It also said there would be a pdf user manual and 6 more rar files, one of which would contain the Kontakt stuff. I have none of those. Everybody else get a pdf and 6 more rars?

Man, I haven't had this hard a time installing software since the days of punched tape.

    EDIT:
Tried a different program for extracting the rar (an ancient command-line version), and it informed me that one of the rar files is corrupt, but not which one. Just "unexpected end of archive". This probably explains why I am missing files.

It sounds like some of the rar files are corrupt/incomplete.

    part1-4 is 618,981kb
    part5 is 618,786kb

The ones that aren't that size probably need to be downloaded again
