I always wondered how the term "fag" came about in UK (actual origin)? (of course, in the States it means something else)....

Could just be an abbreviation of 'faggot' which used to be a term for a bundle of twigs or sticks used to make a fire.
 
Also, (unconnected) historically in 'posh' boarding schools in the UK, junior pupils who did minor chores for older boys were called 'fags' (see 'Tom Brown's Schooldays')

Actually, I can see the UK & US connection very clearly now........especially when Bapu says: "an older boy made me do it"
