What's an Alembic?  Sounds like some sort of torturous exercise device used by Richard Simmons...
 

As far as I can tell is that it is the lid / top part of a distillery...

I believe it was covered here several hundred pages ago, and though the distillery part is also correct, an alembic is a vessel used to purify things.
 
The company was named by one Owsley "Bear" Stanley, known for his association with the Grateful Dead and his, er, talent for purifying certain chemicals.
