I loved playing with Projects 5, even long after its demise. As recently as a few years back, I was using Projects 5 for simple loop based sound pieces in the vein of video game music of funk instrumentals (example here - https://hitrecord.org/records/2876691). I loved the MIDI loop banks, especially the Bass ones which were super cool (such as in this track https://hitrecord.org/records/1897539). Unfortunately, when I finally had to give up the ghost on my XP Clevo laptop and move over to a Win10 HP laptop, I found there were too many problems using Projects. It worked, but the audio was so low it was unusable. It was also a bummer that Sonar stopped recognising it as a Rewire instrument (some other DAWs still do, however). Seemed strange that Cakewalk stopped allowing a Cakewalk product to recognise another Cakewalk product (even if it was legacy).
We can only hope this program will be ressurected. (....but I doubt it)

The creative workflow in P5 was brilliant, intuitive, and not bloated or too complicated.  Way ahead of it's time. 
 
If BandLab has acquired all of the Cakewalk code (IP), maybe they should take another look at this piece of legacy software.  Potentially a Bitwig killer here, if they can dust this off and bring it up to date with a modern audio engine.
 
As I recall there was a thread a while back discussing the issues with moving this product into the 64-bit multi-core audio processing world.  Not the least of which would require a complete re-write of the audio engine.
 
Several ideas from P5 made their way into Sonar, but it was never the same. As a mainstream DAW, Sonar aims to be everything to everybody, but P5 was more focused on music creation.   I think that there is room for a tool like this in today's market, especially with the explosion in modern music production 'in the box'.
 
Maybe time for some new eyes on this???

I never thought I would see the day that Sonar joined Project 5 in the dustbin of history.  Sad...

wait n see, the source code itself has value / is an asset, to the right group... though obviously it's better with certain folk like Noel going with it , if it goes to a new home. I could quite understand if him and the other are a bit jaded / fed up of things.. hopefully the new year, will be the start of newer positive things the them all.

This is a good idea and maybe even feasible.  Imagine leaving SONAR as is and going with the easy to grok P5 for BAndLab's online DAW.  A bunch of re-write, but once that is done you have an slim and clean code.  They could add whichever features and flesh it out.
 
But that won't work.  Noel already jumped on that idea as backwards - since SONAR already added them.
 
The one problem w/ SONAR is so many functions seem tacked on - users have to go into registration for X # of reasons, the Matrix almost works like a 5th wheel rather than integrated, etc. etc.  At least P5 could be organized smoother, for our new online users/babesinthewood.  Part of the reason for SONAR losing its numbered series 
was so the screen would look less like a MS program and more approachable by newbies, according to Cake.  And, of course, that lost them a bunch of users who loved the old look and knew where everything was.
 
If BandLab keeps SONAR 2017 on the server but goes for new users w/ a simple 64 version of P5 (w/ cheap buy-ins for SONAR users), they could snag the best of both worlds.

they won't keep sonar going as you know it.. clean slate and all that.. and it really REALLY depends on what / how much of the IP they have bought. cakewalk name itself is a better known name than sonar.
 
project 5 has parallels to reason .. but now even reason has gone vst.. maybe to do with the new owners also.
 
it really depends on how much they want to alter things.. much like if you have a house.. if it's smaller things.. to well near as well rebuilding it.

When the Matrix View was introduced in Sonar I had high hopes Sonar would evolve to a more Project 5 type of application. However, the Matrix View never evolved from the rather "bare bones" state (compared to Project 5) to something more. It still feels more like a gadget than a fully blown part of Sonar.
 
Maybe the new owner of Sonar's assets will develop the Matrix View/Sonar combination to be more like Project 5. At least we can hope for that. A full resurrection of Project 5 seems unlikely, but hey... We can always dream, can't we?

Either one would be nice.  I don't understand why they didn't make the matrix inline like P5 is though.

Cakewalk could had have a "Bitwig" in their hands, long before Bitwig even existed. I don't know how many users Bitwig has, but it's a LOT. That's why I am still really baffled by the decision to drop Project 5. They had a potential winner in their hands, and they just abandoned the future. 
 
Let's be fair, while Sonar is a great DAW for the more "traditional" user, it does not attract too many "new  type" users. If Cakewalk would have kept Project 5 (or, if really not possible, did a better integration of Project 5 with Sonar, in stead of the half-hearten never matured matrix view), they would have kept the "old" user base AND attracted a "new blood" user base.
 
I am really sad how things have worked out. I predicted that if Cakewalk would drop Project 5, they would make a huge mistake. And it seems that I was not wrong, because Cakewalk ceased to exist.

I've always been suspicious that Cake either lost the P5 code, or didn't own it outright to begin with.
 
Who knows, maybe Bitwig bought the P5 IP and created Bitwig with it.
