Will this card work with my asrock z97?  or will it give me the slower version of thunderbolt.  (whatever that is LOL)

Absolutely won't work.

The motherboard has to specifically support a Thunderbolt-3 add-in-card.
Motherboard has to have a Thunderbolt-3 header... and full support in the BIOS.

Thanks Jim.  The sales guy at micro center said it would.  He said it went in the video slot?   I didn't think it would be that easy.  perhaps he meant that it would give me TB 2 ?
Why does the asrock z97 claim to be TB ready ?

The Z97 Pro4 *is* Thunderbolt-2 ready.
It supports their (ASROCK) Thunderbolt-2 add-in-card.
Microsoft chose not to support "PCIe via Thunderbolt" with Thunderbolt-2 controllers (only Thunderbolt-3).
Not sure why... but (unfortunately) that left a lot of folks in the lurch.
