I'm thinking about pulling the trigger on an AEA R84 microphone and possibly one of their preamps too if I can swing the cost. Does anyone have any opinions (good or bad) on these mics? Are there better options for the money?

Thanks!

Great mics, certainly, universally so for many sources.  What application will you use it on, Double Bass? (judging by the picture)

Good stuff.  Their stereo mic is wonderful.

This is a piece done with the R84 (thru the aea pre) and a Royer 121 (Green River Pre) set up as a Blumlin pair.
Full Moon
I find myself grabbing the 121 more often than the 84 for mono recording.

Why is that? The 121 is the other mic I'm considering. Which AEA preamp are you using? Any comments on that?
I love your tracks! It sounds like you record similar instruments to me.

Double bass will certainly be one application. Acoustic instruments and vocals (especially male vocals) are other things I want to record. I'd also like to try mid-sides room recording.

The AEA is the RPQ-500, great pre; love the EQ on it. You get exactly what you hear in the room
with that on either of the Ribbons. The Great River is a fine piece of kit as well.
I go to the 121 probably because its size and ease of set up, the 84 is a little awkward with the built in cable.
Thanks on the tracks btw, Billy Leach is the writer/performer on Full Moon.
He also did the steel work on Crossroads, my lap work was/is a little weak.
Maybe I should practice a bit?
I much prefer the Blumlin Pair technique to the mid-side stereo.
I added a little "sweetener" on the Full Moon mix,
but basically it was "gorgeous" on the monitors going to disc in the control room.
Probably should have put up a room mic for the verb...

If you're going to run up the credit card anyway, why not go for broke and get the R44? They've got an "economy" version now that's only $2500, not counting the preamp.

As long as money is no object, go bapu, and get a pair so you can do stereo!
