I know people like Windows 10 but my observation has been in many cases it sucks big time. It gives us no option for hands on control anymore.
I'm about to  re install Windows 7 on my wife's Laptop. She ends up spending hours fighting with W10 and just when we get it running a like it did under W7,  Windows 10 changes everything back without warning and now you spend another hour fixing stuff that should not be broken.  I just had to re install our Printers drivers ,,again...

They really need to give back the option of _ "Let me choose when Windows downloads and installs updates"
It even removed Windows update shortcut from the control panel because I guess they don't what us to muck about.

I don't know if there would be any connection between Windows and Sonar from this, but literally yesterday I was answering someone's question about Power Management Advanced Options in Windows, and I wanted to accurately supply the name of the parameter I was referring to, so I went into MY system to grab the correct name for it - and discovered that Windows had RESET the Power Plan from High Performance back to Balanced, - which ROYALLY aggravated me.

If I get some time later today, I will go back into my settings to see if any others were changed/reset by Windows Update.

All I am suggesting is that you might want to review your settings to make sure some stellar decision by a Microsoft engineer hasn't changed something that could affect the current Sonar and not a prior version.

I believe the above is not particularly likely, but if you are in there looking for potential issues, it might be worth just keeping this in the back of your head as you look, just in case.

This is something I need to check.  After the last windows 10 update my laptop started choking with the wasapi driver but work ok with my asio device.  Before the update both were working file.  I had set the power plan before the update. Hymmm?

Hasn't anyone figured out a way to totally nuke Win10 Updates?

I haven't unpdated my Win7 Pro 64 DAW since the day I built up the OS to SP-1
and it's been spectacular ever since that day.

As annoying as the last major Windows 10 "forced" update was, I don't think it has anything to do with this. This thread encouraged me to install the latest again and I got the same result as dappa1. The performance is up to normal again. Could all this happened because of a bad update in the first place?

From now on I'll switch between versions when this happens now I know it's so easy to do.

Give this a try Johnny. It is a standalone utility  with which you can disable automatic updates was well as many other annoying features of win 10.

Fwiw there is still a windows update shortcut for when you want to manually check. Just type 'settings' in the taskbar search box and run the app. I just re-enable updates using this utility when it suits me and run the update manually.

Yes I found the Windows Updater by asking "Cortina" At least she knows where stuff is ;)
But there's not much point opening it other than to run a manual update.
I might give your little utility a try for my Office W10 computer.
I know it updated because I lost most of my Taskbar icons and like everyone said , I had to re set the power plan.
My DAW is immune because it's always off line.
I only plug the LAN cable in when I know there's a Sonar update,, I rarely use the internet with that machine.
Sometimes for looking up lyrics.

Absolutely true on the update setting - that is all it is for.

I know others disagree, but I am with you 100% on isolating your DAW. I install sonar and audio interface driver updates manually, and only connect via CCC to register if ever necessary. I have my studio PC on it's own offline network and never have issues. It is amazing how long you can have trouble free operation without any of the so called latest important updates. Should an issue eventually arise (months or years later!), I update everything.
