  • Can anyone offer me some advice to get my Roland TR-8 in sync with Sonar X3??? (p.2)

Make sure you have updated the TR-8 Firmware to the newest 1.10 version.  available on Roland Aira website (Roland too I think).

there is a lot of midi updates n the firmware 1.10.

I connect my TR-8 and TB-3 with audio cables no usb midi.  I run the audio through my focusrite 24 and record the inputs within sonar.  I haven't tried the usb recording or assigning different outputs via usb midi/audio yet.

reason I am doing this currently is I have other midi usb hardware devices I am using and recording and don't want to fight/play with drivers/usb/midi setups right now (sheer lazy right now).

the only solution to your issue I have read about so far is update TR-8 Firmware and/or adding a delay 1.25 ms on the TR-8 track to get sync back in line.

I know this is a very late reply, but I just have to say that all of you software guys and your midi sync issues just crack me up.  I too run the tr8, along with a ton of other gear, ALL SYNCED quite nicely (triple drum machines etc.) without EVER having a midi sync problem going into Sonar Artist. The reason?  I keep the midi time clock HARDWARE based - You guys forget that whenever you allow a DAW to control sync- which is from a SOFTWARE standpoint, you are BEGGING for glitch problems.  I use (2) Studio Captures with (9) HARDWARE synths ALL hooked up via USB to an Intel I7 PC and actually play the instruments. The time you guys spend knocking your heads around with DAW issues and your VST's and the like could be better spent learning Hardware and simply some traditional musicianship rather than being just great sound engineers (as most of you guys are).  With all of the various sources for software getting crammed into DAW's from several major competitors....bottom line is:  Just ain't there yet folks, no matter how much RAM and computing power ya have.

1st Post eh?

I have no worries hooking up my Hardware to Sonar. None at all. No drift. Plays all nicely with my NI gear.

They were just playing with you, because many of the folks in the forums have also been around since before midi even existed, and many have also lived through the trials and tribulations of getting gear to sync properly as master/slave.

So, because your post had sort of a perceived bit of a swipe at the notion that the forum engineers might not be aware of the ins and outs of external gear and midi, that was why they posted like they did - but they were just messing with you a little, that was all, from my take on it. :)

In any case, glad you jumped in and posted - please do continue.  We are a collective bunch of interesting folks, but most DO try their best to help folks out.  We are all trying to use these products to create/produce music, and we often need all the help we can get.

Ok well  - Maybe I was taking a bit of a swipe I admit but more towards the focus these days on what I see is a shift towards spending too much time and effort on software itself and it's related technical aspects.  Finding really great sounding music these days that is also good music is getting harder and harder, and I believe it is because of this focus.  With the same time and effort spent dealing with all of that....folks could probably fix a lot of timing issues with just learning to play the dang thing in time and/or use external sync with hardware whenever possible......heaven forbid.
