Cactus Music
I use drummers that don't need click tracks  :)

No really, the best tracks I've recorded were with the core group of a band or even sometimes just me on pounding on an acoustic and a drummer live and muttering something close to what I wanted for lyrics.
Two people or more will keep the tempo going. And if keyboards need to be added latter they just don't get quantized.

Anyhow this is off topic . Well sort of, the word drummer was in the topic, right?

just curious as to how you setup 14 mics on a kit and wondered what i am missing:
Kick,front and back.
Snare,top and bottom.
Hat.
Overhead,left and right.
3 or 4 x toms.
that makes 10- 11 mics
are you mic`ing ride and crash etc? or other percussion or what am i missing?
always keen to improve my setup.(you definately can teach an old dog new tricks)
thanks

Room stereo + room mono would add to 14 ... actually the most important ones to me

I'm sure we could find excuses to even hike mic count higher ;-)

I'd rather have too many mics setup then not enough. :)

yep,i have used all 16 preamps on a kit including 2 x  NT1-A`s as room mics just to see and then spent ages muting most of them.
guess it depends on your room size, how well it`s treated and the drummer,of course.
thanks

isn`t that why we are here?
i doubt too many commercial engineers frequent this forum and if it`s good enough for Glyn Johns et al,
why not?
i will show you mine if you show me yours an we can all watch?
or better still, move this to the Coffee House where it definately won`t be seen by the competition.
cheers

There is not a compaction here... you are over reacting to an illusion of humor. ;)
So I set up 14 mics... big real... I may put one outside next to the house for that "outside by the house" sound or I may put one in the bathroom for that "in the bathroom sound". There is no point to how anyone mics a kit...
I thought I was the only one who miced cymbals from under until I saw the CW how to mic a kit video and I mic them that way for the same reasons... There are NO rules in recording except for the people who think there are :) lol

I PMed you back... ;) if you really need to see mine. also now I get to see yours.. ;)

Peace my friend!
