I've never attempted to master before so I created a topic in another area of the forums and got a lot of great suggestions. Here is my first try. It is an acoustic version of one of my band's songs called "The Risk".

Let me know if I did okay. I know I'm not winning the loudness war but is it good enough?

Over all I would say this is a good mix/master. I am work on my ear buds (decent Sennheiser IE6s) so I can'r entirely sure but it seems some of the vocal notes are too crisp (almost like a deesser is needed on the vocal). It could just be me though (or my ear buds).

Very nice song and performances. Vocal is excellent and cuts through the mix at just the right level.

I'm no expert at engineering but I like the song alot.  You're a baritone?  It seems to be in the right range for you.  During the verses it might be wise to change up the melody with embellishments (like neighboring tones apoggiatura and suspensions etc)  It's just a way to spice up songs.  Good luck with it!

Good song - I'd like to hear your band's version :-) I'm listening on decent computer speakers and I agree that overall it seems like a good mix. Just curious, what are you using for mastering?

If I were to *really* pick nits I'd say carve a little low/mid-range from the acoustic to open up the vocal a bit. I also hear some "twinkly bits" along with the strings, and my ears want to hear just a tad more. But that's just what I hear.

Good work!

Donplee,

Here is the full band version. We did this in a studio back in 2011. I am using built in plugins that come with Sonar Platinum. I can open up a project to let you know later if you want to know the exact plugin I'm using on the master channel.

Outstanding vocal performance! Mix is good - guitars aren't over-compressed and leave a nice hole in the middle for the vocal. As far as mastering, it sounds pretty good here. But given that I have no experience mastering singer-songwriters, mine is an uninformed opinion. If you were to enable downloads on your SoundCloud page, I could do an objective analysis that might be useful.

Very nice. Great song. Did you do that recording in Sonar?

I quite like this, the Mix sounds good here on the Adam's, as to your Mastering, which IMFO is very much a contextual/final media thing IHNFI.  The mix is the important part and you have achieved that with this.

Sounds good and crisp through headphones, nice warmth to the vocals. I might pull the acoustic guitars in from the far L & R just a touch.
