I'm moving my Sonar environment to a new computer (Win10 /64). I have the same MIDI interfaces, but for some reason, Sonar doesn't recognize them. When I open existing files, I get a "missing MIDI ports" dialog. I have changed the Friendly Name of the ports to exactly match the name listed under 'missing devices', but I still get the missing device dialog.
I don't want to have to manually re-assign devices for every project I open.
How do I get the devices to match and be recognized automatically?
 

 

Windows midi driver assignments can be a bit frustrating. Unfortunately the friendly names will not make any difference to windows or Sonar finding midi devices - they are for your reference only. What is the name that windows/Sonar gave the midisport before you changed it? Did you by any chance install the midisport and then move it to another port causing windows to see it as a new device and assign a new port (usually designated by a 2 in its original 'unfriendly' name)? Did you install multiple or additional devices in a different order to the old system? 
 
The output order of midi devices is quite simple to change under preferences if that is the issue. If windows has assigned multiple ports, you need to uninstall the 'additional' device and move the midisport back to its original port.
 
 

Bruce,  Thanks for the reply. I don't have the old computer hooked up anymore, and I don't know if the specific physical USB ports are part of the problem. I don't know which physical port each of the three devices was plugged into. The three MIDI devices are exactly the same, so only the order might have changed.
 
I tried uninstalling the NanoKontrol and re-installing it to see if it would move to the end of the list, but it doesn't.
 
I thought I could get the order right by using the Move Checked Devices to Top button in the Setup / Midi Devices dialog.
However, that seems to be broken for the MIDI input.  I'll submit a support request on that.
 
 

You can change the the midi output order using 'move checked devices to the top'. The midi input order can't be changed this way,  but it will not affect projects loading - only the midi outputs being different will cause Sonar to ask you to re-assign ports.
 
It is possible to edit the ttseq.ini file to change the midi input order in the track input drop-down list if you wish to, but again, this will not affect loading projects. It is simply for convenience.
 
 What name is the midisport showing up as on your new system (you have posted a pic of the friendly name, but I can't tell what it was originally called)? This may be a clue as to what the problem is. It is listed under your midi devices beside the friendly name.
