Dan could sell me anything. And has.

I do like Kotelnikov a lot, but specifically as a master-bus compressor. It's a very different animal from the Sonitus Compressor, and as good as it is for busses, not nearly as versatile.

I wish I had a free compressor to recommend that comes close to the Sonitus, but I don't. The one in the Meldaproduction free pack is decent, but not in the same league with the Sonitus.

I almost forgot about ToneBooster Track Essentials.  Not free, but one of the best VST bargains around -- Eight quality plugins for 20 euro (about $24 USD).

Thanks for all the suggestions.  I will wade through these once I'm back at my laptop.

OK, so everyone's saying Sonitus Compressor doesn't work in other DAWs. I'm trying it in Samplitude and it seems to work just fine for me. And the Surround Compressor seems to automatically block all but 2 channels if your output is stereo.

It may be a buffer or other audio setting causing it to malfunction... maybe.

It's not so much a case of not working, as much as simply not appearing in the list of available plugins.  I've tried with both Reaper and Mixbus and it just doesn't show as an available plug-in.

The Waves C1 is workhorse kind of plugin: https://www.waves.com/plugins/c1-compressor
The GUI is in the same style as Sonitus.

A second vote for ToneBoosters. They're quite good and often overlooked.

And lets not forget MCompressor: http://www.meldaproduction.com/MCompressor

That MCompressor looks perfect, and at my favourite price point!  The Waves stuff also looks good, I just can't justify dropping $49 on a single plug-in currently.

Thanks for the recommendations!
