FWIW we do have plans to intelligently use existing lanes when possible for new recordings so it wouldn't necessarily go to a new take lane every time.  We recognize people work in sections.  So yeah a verse might need 10 takes but the chorus only 4, and why should there be 14 take lanes at the end of that.  There's some other cool stuff we want to add as well.  It's in the oven, but there's a lot in the oven right now, so it's not next week, but it shouldn't be next spring.  Man it's October already!  Time flies when you are releasing every month.

That sounds pretty cool. It's basically what I work like anyway

Thank you Keith,

Many people will be happy for that.

this is exactly the type of thing I've been waiting for.
wasted space on take lanes has always been my main gripe. good to hear this.

I would love to know a work around for this as well.  I usually have lots of track lanes because I will record 3 or four takes of one section of a song and then move on and loop another section.  After doing 4 or 5 sections I can have 20 or more lanes but only some lead in of each section overlap.  I usually just lasso select and shift-drag to get all the takes in the first 4 or 5 lanes and then remove empty take lanes.

A possible workaround is to split the sections of your song (intro, verse, chorus, etc.) into separate tracks and combine the finished parent tracks of your compings later on.

That's how I do Comping in SONAR and it works very well for me because Take Lanes keep manageable.

Okay, I've posted my tip in the latest "Friday's Tip of the Week." It's not a "magic bullet," but I think it's faster than clicking and dragging.

I really hope other cool stuff includes pre and post record buffers. A common workaround for this is to use punch record mode and set punch regions slightly wider, than needed for a section. If new take lanes will have overlapping audio, how is it going to be handled by Sonar?
