Hi all,
My wife directs a choir and she occasionally asks me to do orchestral arrangements for them.
Sometimes I get lucky and find a decent MIDI file online that I can just change the synths used (from the default TTS) to 3rd party synths and then tweak accordingly.
The way I've done it in the past was too load the GM file into Platinum and then add my 3rd party synths and drag the corresponding data to those tracks.
However when I do that with this file, I get no sound ...so I opened Event List and deleted everything but the notes but that didn't help.
In an effort to shotgun troubleshoot, I dragged one of the stripped down clips (violin) to the desktop and opened an older project.
I placed the clip on a Cinematic Strings track in the older project, in between 2 clips that play fine.
When the timeline gets to the clip there is silence and no indication it is sending a signal to CS.
I looked at the PRV and velocities and modulation are up (CS uses the mod wheel for volume) and they look fine.
Can someone please tell me what I'm missing here?

Thanks very much,
Randy

Is this a free file anyone could grab to check?

Yessir, I'm 99% sure I got it at http://www.midis101.com/free_midi/36454/The_Prayer_bocelli___Dion
(I actually downloaded it a month ago but I'm pretty sure that's it).
Thanks so much for your efforts.

I say 99% sure because I actually downloaded it a month ago but when I google that particular file name it's at the top of the list and is highlighted indicating I've visited it before.
Thanks so much for your efforts!

I saw that your posts had been sent to the "spam locker" and I restored them. However they appear to duplicates so I will delete the dups. In future please alert one of the hosts to restore a post if it has inadvertently been removed

Yessir, scook PMed me earlier and I'll remember to do that...just curious though, was it the YT link that blocked it?

This is a bone of contention for some of us who do use downloaded files from time to time. I mostly make my own backing tracks ( since 1985) but I do now look and see if there's a good one already posted somewhere.
I preview them in Win Amp or Media player.

You have to Open them in Sonar to get the proper tempo etc. This also load up system exclusive data and all the CC events.
But for some reason a lot of this stuff does not ever show on Sonars event list. Just like you are finding out.
Sometimes you get lucky and can force the changes you want buy copy pasting, slip editing the front, looking in piano edit etc.. but PG changes etc and CC weirdness still happen no matter what.
It would seem Sonar uses a different system of dealing with this data so it's becomes a witch hunt. I blame the fact that a lot of events do not show in Sonars list where it would be so simple to edit them.
Proof.. open the same file in another DAW and there they are. every event. So that's what I do. I used to use a free version of a simple midi sequencer but it no longer works past XP 32 bit so I use Cubase 5LE which came with my Tascam interface.
I think you could try a demo of Reaper or any other DAW and see if those work as well.

Seems to play fine with TTS-1. I substituted Garritan Pocket Orchestra for the opening strings, and they are also playing okay right out of the box.

I think there must be something wrong with your routing or the state of the synth or the status of the tracks to which you transferred the MIDI parts. All events on each track have a specific MIDI channel embedded, of course, so you'll want to make sure either your track have forced MIDI out channels set or the synth is receiving on the embedded channel.

+1, in addition to routing, also make sure that you didn't inadvertently solo a track somewhere and check that whatever VSTi you choose plays with a MIDI controller before dragging MIDI data to it. I was also able to pull the tracks without removing any events into a piano without issues (knowing all keys will fire on a piano).

Typically Sysex data in the events list will cause grief, and there was none in this file that I noticed. Another side comment (when using samplers) is that all keys are not always mapped to sounds, which can cause grief to the unwary.
