so sorry to be asking this newbie question -- I used to use an old version of Cakewalk from 1998 and finally updated a few months ago -- and I don't have a lot of time to devote to learning the new software although it is important that I get up to speed

anyway I am trying to use midi input for the first time to record a midi track -- and admittedly I am using run down old stuff, but I have a little "oxygen 8" keyboard and I am coming midi out of that into an alesis i02 interface into my new Sonar Artist software

and I do finally have midi input but there is about a half second lag from when I push the note to when I hear it -- anybody know some things I might check to try to tighten up that latency so I can use it to record parts?

Thanks!!!

thanks -- I will definitely go through those -- probably won't get to finish tonight but that should put me on the right track -- thanks!!

the buffer size setting mentioned in the second link did the trick thanks so much -- I think that maybe the same setting that I had previously adjusted the other way because some of my midi tracks were having little dropouts in them -- if that's the case I can adjust it to fast/small for recording and to slow/large for optimum playback when the time comes for mixdown

What you are planning to do with the buffers is a very common workflow and should work well for you.

The Alesis I02 doesn't come with ASIO drivers. (I owned one years ago as a back up for my laptop/since upgraded).
Alesis suggests you use ASIO4ALL as a driver for the for the unit. im not sure what your using for a driver but this will have a direct effect on latency (for Audio and Midi).

I don't suggest using ASIO4ALL anymore, there seems to be more problems than there used to be.
However at this point, if you can not remedy this latency issue, you might want to try ASIO4ALL.
Just read the instructions. if set up correctly, you will have better results than you are right now.

A lot has changed since 1998, including the way drivers are processed through you OS.
There is a lot to catch up on.

Good luck.

Thanks Guys!!  Indeed a lot has changed since 1998    -- I was previously using cakewalk just for midi sequencing and I did not have audio recording at all -- just the soft synths alone are a big upgrade!  and with the audio recording I'm like a kid in a candy store -- only problem is I don't know how to do nuthin' yet -- it will come with time though

Thanks Again!  For the time being I think I will be ok just adjusting the buffer back and forth -- and fyi I think maybe the version of the I02 that I have has a plug and play type driver -- I know that when I plugged it in to the USB it came right up and identifies itself by its name right there in the devices list

I02 wasn't a good purchase for me though -- I originally bought it hoping to use it as an audio interface and it crapped out on the 1st or 2nd use -- the audio/vu meter just stays pegged and no audio comes through -- I saw on the net that this is a somewhat common problem with them and there is a fix -- but I am not going there so now it is just a midi interface for me -- I have a zoom R8 stand alone multi tracker that doubles as an audio interface

What I have done so far though is just record my midi mix onto tracks 1 and 2 and then use the rest of the tracks on the R8 for audio -- baby steps!!
