I'm looking for a soft-synth for Sonar Platinum.  I need it to be 64 bit, as 32 bit synths seem to lock up the production.  What I need in instruments is steel drums and the like.

Anyone have any suggestions on what I should look for?

I would start with Rapture Session and see what you can find there.

The included Cakewalk TTS-1 synth has several categories like Chromatic Percussion and Percussive, the latter includes steel drums.
 
Cakewalk TTS-1 shows up as a DXi in the 64-bit version of Sonar Platinum.
 
It's a good, getting started, multi-timbral GM synth.  You can always replace the sounds later with something from an expensive sampler library, of course

First check all the Sonar synths, plenty of good stuff here. If there is nothing that you like I recommend Sample Tank 3 and Chromaphone2.

Try omnisphere 2. It has everything you need!
