  • Can I convert CC 1 to some other CC?

Using Platinum.  I want to use the mod wheel on my keyboard to record CC data in real time.  The problem is that I want to record CC 22.  My keyboard does not have a functional assignable slider or knob.  In an earlier posting on this topic, someone mentioned using a midi plug-in from Piz.  From the description on the Piz website, this would appear to do the trick. I downloaded it and placed the dll in my VST folder; Sonar scanned it and recognized it.  However, it does not show up in any FX bin anywhere.

I'm hoping that someone can tell me how to make the Piz midi mapping effect work or suggest some other method of converting CCs.

Thanks

Pete

If you are using a Soft Synth you could try midi learn on the item you want to control.

My approach is this: use the CC as assigned by the software. When recording automation I assign CC1 (mod wheel), record the automation, and remove the assignment.

You do the assignment by right-clicking in the meter for the automation lane and choosing "Remote Control". Pick you controller (CC1 in my case) and disable remote control when done.

This works reliably across all the VST's I have.

Pete,
There is a MIDI FX plugin called CC Map at http://tencrazy.com/gadgets/mfx/ that will do exactly what you need.  It converts one input continuous controller to another and has the option to pass through the original controller as well.  I have successfully used it in Sonar Platinum to map CC#1 from my controller to CC#11.  It is available in 32 and 64 bit.  The plugin is free to use, but you can donate to the developer.  The site has numerous other very useful plugins.

The Piz MIDI plugins should work for you, but as you found, they are not VST FX.  They must be treated as VST instruments in Sonar and require slightly more complicated routing.

Hope this helps,

Hi Ron:  I have downloaded the tencrazy plugin but I am unable to make it work.  I am inserting as a midi effect; I set the Input CC as 1 and the output CC as some other value, say 25. Input and output channel is set to 1.   I enable automation write and record on the midi track using the mod wheel.  It records the midi data as cc 1 and not 25. The same result follows regardless of whether "pass along Input CC" is checked. What am I doing wrong?

thx

If all you want to do is record the mod wheel and change it to CC22 afterwards, here is one way
  • After recording, right-click the envelope
  • Select "Assign Envelope"
  • Select "MIDI..."
  • Change the value to 22 in the "MIDI Envelope" dialog

Pete,
All MIDI FX in Sonar apply the changes on playback in the same manner as audio FX.  Sonar does not support input FX that are "printed" to the track during recording.  The data you record will be Mod wheel (CC1), but the CC is converted to CC22 when the data is played through the FX and applied to the instrument.  This allows you to hear the effect of CC22 on the instrument in real time while recording as well as when the recorded MIDI is played back.

EDIT:  The following procedure only works when recording CC MIDI data in a track, not with automation lanes.

If you need to record the data as CC22, then you could feed the output of an initial MIDI track containing the MIDI FX out through a loopback port, such as loopBe1 or loopMIDI and record it into a second MIDI track with the input set to the loopback port.

If you have Reaktor, here are two ways to do that.
The top circuit will convert incoming MIDI on a fixed CC # to another one.
The bottom is a sketch for a way to send one to many.

Is something like midiox an option, where you can remap the input data before it hits sonar? I don't know if there's any 64 bit equivalents, or whether it doesn't matter since this would run outside of sonar anyway.

It would function similar to the reaktor example above.

Check out Transmidifier, that can do midi cc change and much more.
I use this to transform my breath controller midi cc to cc1 and cc11 with adjusted curves.
