I did a clean install of Windows 10 today on my main machine and after installing Platinum I noticed that the Cakewalk DX AmpSim effect was missing. I have lots of other amp sim stuff, notably Guitar Rig 5, but I love the cheesy little AmpSim gadget. With the right reverb/delay effects it's pretty wicked in the right kind of setting so I was pretty distressed that it wasn't there. I manually installed every single installer in the Command Center downloads folder; alas, it was nowhere to be found. I finally got it working again, along with the Pitch and Tape Sim plugs. I went looking around on the forum to see if anyone else had run into this and couldn't find anything, so I thought I'd post what I did for anyone else that finds themselves in this bind. The old hands probably already know all this.

I went digging around in the old Program Files folder from my previous version of Windows (in Windows.old after the clean install) and there they were in Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Plugins: TapeSim.AX, AmpSim.AX and Pitch.AX. Clearly these are not VST plugins, they are in fact DirectX COM components, and they get registered with a special utility.

So I fired up a command prompt (running as administrator) and set the working directory to Program Files\Cakewalk\Shared Plugins and ran the following commands:

regsvr32 AmpSim.AX
regsvr32 TapeSim.AX
regsvr32 Pitch.AX

After firing up Sonar, there they were, and I'm very happy they are.

I do have a question, though. Are these plugs no longer shipped with Sonar and the fact that I had them just artifacts of previous installs? I had X1, X2 and X3 installed also, so it's possible. And if they are shipped with Sonar, what installer should I run to get them?

Anyway, the day was saved and I'm a happy camper.

I know the the AmpSim and TapeSim FX are on the X1 Disc 1, but not certain if the pitch DX FX is. The Pitch FX is on SONAR 8.5, though, along with the other two. But, if you didn't buy the 8.5 Discs, you have to have SONAR 8 installed to use the downloaded version of 8.5, as that's how it was when I got 8.5.

Yes. AmpSim is my little friend.

I use it for its hard distortion.

Glad I found this post, I'm looking for anyway to improve softsynth guitar sounds. I have a CD of X1 Producer, I think it's time to put it in the slot to find out what else might be there. Thanks

There's boatloads of free or inexpensive amp sims, and I myself am very partial to Guitar Rig, I have GR 3, 4 and 5 installed on my DAW and there's an incredible array of sounds to be had there. I particularly love the DI bass amp. I'll have to check out the Voxengo stuff, I've heard so much about it. I also mic up my Marshall 18 watt home brew and record direct a lot, so I don't need much in the way of enhancement when I go that route.

All that said, there's just something marvelous about Amp Sim.

To be sure, when you first fire it up it can sound pretty unimpressive, even a bit wimpy against its more modern brethren. Spend some time tweaking things here and there, though, and this snarling beast is unleashed to produce this clear, almost clean but hugely gnarly sound that just works for much of the kind of music I do. I also use it a lot as an "undercoat" for a guitar track by cloning the track, removing the original plugin from the copy and adding Amp Sim. I love it.

Good report!

I was wondering about this.  I like the TapeSim, don't want to give it up

Thanks for the post.

Ive a similar issue.  My old laptop is not behaving and i got a good employee discount on a newer laptop in my job.   I have win7 32 bit on old laptop.   Win7 32bit on new laptop.   Installed X3 on new laptop and missing a ton of DirectX stuff.   These are all in the shared plug ins folder.   I even copied the share plugins folder over to the new laptop and still no joy.    I ran that regsvv32 command but they are still not showing up.    The old laptop is showing 49 plug ins under the DirectX menu and only 27 showing on the new laptop.  That's a ton of stuff missing.   And its not like they are third party. A lot of these are actually Cakewalk items.    Any ideas guys?  thanks.
