All of it means, like so much else in Sonar, your attention is continually required to make sure that you haven't done something unintentional.

Everything you've mentioned doesn't sound like a problem with the Smart Tool, but a problem with not knowing how to get the most out of zoom and the MIDI magnifier.

Ok, Craig, I'm trying to use Midi Magnifier.    Got three monitors, set how I want them, and the correct zoom level.   In preferences, set midi magnifier on.   Go the PRV   If I'm real accurate, I can see the smart tool cursor change at different points on each note.   Nothing more.   Go to the Event List.    As far as I can tell, midi magnifier doesn't do anything.

What am I missing?

Edit .. ok got a setting where the midi magnifier does something in PRV.   What does it do?  IT CHANGES THE VISUAL PITCH OF THE NOTES!!!!   Good grief.   Now I have to move the magnifier away to see the pitch, and then move the magnifier back to get some clickable hot spots.  Come on, this is not progress, this is adapting to a terrible design.

That it's highly configurable? Also if you're using the inline PRV (which in many cases I prefer), you have all kinds of mouse wheel zoom options (look under Fast Zoom).

I thought your problem was difficulty hitting hot spots when the notes were small enough to make positional selection difficult. Midi Microscope solves that problem because presumably, you know what the pitch is or you wouldn't want to be seeing it bigger so you can do something to it. I have Midi Microscope on a keyboard binding so if I have a really dense bunch of notes, I can magnify a note quickly, do what I need to do, then go back to normal. I also set the magnifier size to 150, which I find better than the default.

Don't forget that in track view, you can switch between two preset zoom levels with the mouse buttons. You can also use screensets to jump between zoom levels in the PRV. For example you could set up a screenset for a huge zoom in the PRV, lock it, set up another one with an overview, lock it, and switch back and forth as needed.

If I can't do something in SONAR it's often I don't know how to do it, not because it can't be done. This is what causes me to search on the documentation to see if I'm missing some feature. But I'm also willing to be flexible, like using the PRV in the multidock for what it does best, and the inline track view PRV for what it does best. "Chacun son gout," and all that.

Is it that smart that a single click in the PRV sets the now time (REALLLY REAALY WISH IT WEREN'T SO .. but anyway) but a click with a slight muscle movement makes a 'drawn' note?   And that drawn note does NOT change the Now Time ... so you are likely to pop back to a completely different area of the project next.

Adjust the click behavior under:
Track View > Options > Click Behavior
