I'm new to Sonar so please forgive me if this is a really newb question. I Googled this and couldn't find anything.
Is it possible to record key presses on my midi controller to the piano roll for further editing (adding, changing, deleting notes)?
Thanks for any help!

The Piano Roll View may be used to edit/view and record MIDI data on tracks. The tracks would already have to be setup in the Track or Console view. There is no way to create a track in the PRV.

Do you mean without the transport running to record MIDI in real time? If so, right click the record button in the Transport module, and choose Step Record. Check the Ref. Guide or Help for how to use Step Recorder.

I was afraid of that. Thanks scook. I appreciate the reply. Maybe there's some other software that can record controller key presses to midi? Time to go hunting.

yes to add what steve said (which he has said it very nicely)
you record a track in sonar (use your keyboard) it will either trigger a soft synth, or sounds of your keyboard and it will show up in the prv. however, bare in mind you want to be recording midi to make it possible to edit notes in the piano roll view. I mean you can do both, but only midi is shown in the piano roll, well controller data to.. but lets not get to far ahead of ourselves here.

take it one step at a time. remember these:
- use your keyboard as a midi triggering devise.
- your keyboard will trigger a soft synth in sonar.
- your not really editing notes in prv (well you are) but they are simply data messages.

this is one of the hardest things to explain to new engineers using DAW software. the process in which a midi keyboard works with in the software. so hang tight and most of all, experiment.

The question was specifically about the PRV. SONAR captures controller data and organizes it into clips in tracks. The only thing the PRV cannot do is create a track. The tracks must be setup in another view. The PRV has no provision for defining tracks, only which tracks to display in the view. What is not clear in the OP is exactly how you wish to capture the data. There are a couple of methods to record controller data. The SONAR program is capturing the data not the individual views in SONAR. The views are presentation and editing tools. Some functions such as creating tracks and defining I/O are performed in the Track and Console views. There are several views capable of MIDI recording and editing including the PRV.

Thanks for all the replies guys. I can learn a lot from your comments. What I just did was insert a soft synth, enabled record on that track and started playing the controller and it did record the notes (midi data) to the PRV. Exactly what I wanted. I just got the controller so I'm new to that also. Thanks again.

This is covered in Tutorial #4 in Getting Started a good place to start when new to SONAR.
