  • How to "END" a song? It won't 'stop.'

Hi Forum,

I'm a little new to using Professional, but I could swear that on my older Cakewalk (an LE version that came with VStudio) when your song's 'information' was over, the song would stop. In other words, when your last audio sound or midi event ended, so did the song.

I finished up a 3 minute song last night (my first on Professional) and when I exported it, it was 19:24 long. 3 minutes of music and the rest silence. Do you have to tell your project that the song is at its end? I don't remember having to do that before (I quit recording for nearly a year, so my memory might not be correct) and I know there are a lot of differences between the two versions. What am I missing? Even when I just play the song in CW it continues on after the song is over. I have watched the CW videos and searched the forums but found nothing. Any help would be greatly appreciated, and hopefully I have expressed my problem in an understandable way.

Thanks,

Jim

Hiya Jim
Put your playback head at the end of your song and scroll down to see if any of the tracks go beyond the end point, also check further along the time line to see if there are any other tracks because sometimes when you import tracks they get but further along the timeline and in that case it will keep playing until it reaches the end.

Along the lines of the above post, sometimes clips that are imported have time stamps.  They might be coded to start at an hour in, etc.  Look for clips well beyond what you think is the end of your project.  I like to use the View Project in Window command, so I see if this is the case.

You can also prevent that from happening by choosing Edit > Preferences, selecting the File > Audio Data category and removing the check mark next to the option entitled "Always Import Broadcast Waves At Their Timestamp."

you need to set up your In points / Out points.
you can use the selection module

or drag in the timeline, then make sure all your tracks you want exported are selected.
here's a little info on Exporting:

Also make sure you don't have any automation envelopes going past where you want the song to end.  It is easy for me to miss the ends of these things, especially when the envelopes are for various parameters of the aux buses.

Wow...Thanks for all the responses. I figured it out with an amalgam of the above suggestions. The song itself was only 64 measures, however, at measure 542 there was a snare hit for some crazy reason, so I suppose that was what made it keep going. I have no idea how it got there. I deleted it, but then a 'crop clip' symbol came up, and when I tried to move it, it kept creating new crop points at random. I finally just copied the drum part, deleted the track, and inserted a new Addictive Drum track and pasted to it. Everything works fine now except for a few tweeks I'll have to redo on the drums. I exported it as a wave and it was 3 minutes long as it should be.

Again, thanks for all the responses. Unfortunately, I have to spend most of my time studying to renew Net+ and get my Security+. It leaves little time to really dig deep into what Professional can do and how to use it properly.

I hear ya, Pat300e. I had to quit music altogether when I got married many years ago. Now I'm happily divorced, but I've still gotta work.

TheDuke - Thanks for the link!. Thanks to everyone for their links!!

Crazy how a freak note that mysteriously appeared 500 measures "in the future" threw me into a tailspin like that.

Again, I really do appreciate all the responses. I've been looking at everything each of you has contributed - learning a lot. Now if I could just compose some good sounding stuff like my favorite bands (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Dregs, 'Wired' era Jeff Beck, Magma, AREA, et.al. ad nauseum) I'll finally be on to something. Long Live 70's Progressive Rock and Fusion!!
