So based on this since I don't have an audio interface with my Surface Pro I shouldn't be using ASIO?

ASIO4ALL may work but it's a calculated risk. Some people report good results, others report show-stopping problems.

I totally agree. Also maybe in that sticky, this link included:
The Desktop Music Handbook

i'm someone who has had nothing but success with asio4all over multiple machines, OSs and interfaces - but you do need to spend a little time configuring the thing
good luck!

Where is Letterman when you need him... He could turn sticky into wiki!

Note: Letterman looks more like Santa after all these years... His sweater holds more letters now.

Well without ASIO, I can confirm that your audio will sound like garbage on Realtek.  There is like a looooong latency with the Windows drivers between playing a note till you hear it sound.

I also have had nothing but success with ASIO4ALL on a clean Windows laptop, with no other audio devices or drivers installed, except the onboard Realtek audio.  The low latency works for me with VST instruments.

But I also agree that it would be a crapshoot to muddy up your DAW with ASIO4ALL if you have other audio devices installed, especially those with their own ASIO drivers.  I saw a recent thread where this caused the OP all sorts of crashing problems when trying to launch Sonar.  Even "safe" mode failed.  He had to clean up all of the ASIO drivers on his machine before he could launch Sonar.

This was not meant as a swing towards ASIO4ALL, or anything else
I meant that this should be "obligatory" reading when joining this forum, as help.
It would probably solve many cases before they even get posted to this forum.
All the best.

indeed, and wasn't taken as such... and i agree, your link should be a sticky, but there's 9 stickies already in the sonar forum...
asio4all is one of Anderton's regular punchbags

even though on the steam forums it's recommended by cakewalk, and analytics showed that it's the most popular driver being used with sonar... why did he even mention it? @Anderton - maybe time to spend some time figuring it (asio4all) out? if i can, i'm sure you can!
