  • Sonar platinum display lag

Hey, I am still getting used to comping in sonar platinum and I've run into a problem. I recorded a bunch of vocal takes and managed to comp a main vocal track using the take lanes and everything. Then I wanted to comp another track from the leftover takes to use as a double. So I hit the take lanes button to minimize them and cloned the track opening them up again on the cloned track and proceeded to comp the double. Only problem is the display is very laggy since I cloned that track especially if I am scrolled down to that part of the project where the vocal tracks are. I got about a third of the way through comping the doubled track but it's annoying. What am I doing wrong? I'm not having any problems with the audio playback or anything just the display. Any ideas?

Try saving the project in a new folder with a slightly augmented name, and test it to see if it functions properly. Worth a try.

I tried it didn't help. I flattened the comp on the first track and that seemed to help a little bit but it's still a little laggy when I scroll down to that part of the project. It's as if it doesn't like showing too many edits on the screen at once.

Well - sometimes the Picture Cache folder can get a bit full or otherwise whacked, and I have seen threads about that causing flaky display scroll on playback or recording.

The 'fix' for the above is to delete the contents of the Picture Cache folder, and Sonar will recreate anything it needs to - what's in that folder are the approximations of the wave files in audio clips that display when Sonar has audio data in a track.  Since Sonar recreates it as is goes, it won't hurt anything to delete the contents of Picture Cache.

On my system, the Picture Cache folder is within the Cakewalk Content folder.  I cannot recall if that is the original location or not, but when you find it, that's it.  (If you are feeling less than brave about deleting content from Picture Cache, you could always copy the folder's content off to some other location, in case you wanted/needed to restore that data).

May want to provide some hardware and project specifics.

I did delete the picture cache already to try to fix the problem but no luck. As far as computer specs I'm using an hp elitebook with a quad core i7 and 12 gigs of ram. As far as the project it's at 16 bits 48, maybe 35 tracks or so, good amount of plugins going, but I don't think it's anything to do with running out of resources. Everything runs very smooth until I scroll down and have those two tracks showing, then it gets visually laggy and hard to work. If I scroll down past that into the take lanes it's smooth again and I can work again. The audio runs smoothly no matter what though. It's really weird. Am I not supposed to clone tracks that have a bunch of takes attached to them?

35 tracks using onboard soundcard ? that's a bit daring if I do say so myself.
try playing with your buffer rate. I know you said sound is fine but I could be a bit of latency rearing its ugly head.
also look for any graphics updates on your onboard video card.

No sorry I should have mentioned I'm using a focusrite Saffire FireWire interface, not the onboard sound card. I don't think it's a latency issue, if I set it low enough sure I can get audio problems with all the plugins and everything going at this point, but I have it set pretty high for mixing. It could have something to do with the graphics card I will try to look for an update and see if that fixes it, but I'm not having any other issues graphics wise, even in sonar, unless those two tracks are on the screen at the same time.

Ok I just checked the video card is up to date. I don't know, it's an annoyance but i think I can still finish the project. It just seems like something that shouldn't be an issue though. Probably some setting somewhere that needs tweaking.
