Brian,
I guess I wish that my Platinum was running as stable as X3 was so I could make music and not continually troubleshoot like I have since I started my love/hate things with computers in 1991. Thanks and I'll let you know.

So far I've actually had a bit more stability out of Plat.  The main difference is I had a 32bit plug that won't work in X3 without freezing on project close.  It actually works in Plat and saved me the upgrade fee to the 64 bit version that offered me no functionality.

Thanks Craig -
I'm going to back-up my Windows 7 and cross that BRIDGE over to Windows 10

Don't know if this is still the case, but when it was available for free, you could roll back within 30 days if there were issues.

FWIW I did an in-place upgrade over W7, didn't wipe the hard drive first...still no problems. Have updated to Windows 10 on three very different machines, all running smooth as silk.

I did the very same, with the same experience.  I was terrified before the 1st, but it went so smoothly - I didn't hesitate on the others.

I would suggest turning off the internet when you are working though.  Windows 10 does what it wants to with the internet in the background in my experience, even setting as many things to "off" as possible.

Update! Part of the problem solved!

Thanks everyone, I'm typing this without reading your latest replies because I'm rushing out the door. But, wanted you to know that when I took my high end laptop back to the studio, and booted Sonar while it was connected via USB 3 to the Audiobox, I was then able to open the projects fine.
I exported a bundle, zipped the projects folder, and also exported the individual tracks while at the studio so that I can take them to my home studio and see if the bundle and the zip file opens in Sonar P., which they probably will (way up above last Nov a few versions of Sonar back, I had trouble opening, but not lately).
Will report back.
But, for the problem of needing the Audiobox connected, I'm wondering if any of you have suggestions. I didn't try this while I was at the studio, but I'm thinking, should I change my Sonar preferences while connected to the Audiobox to NONE, by removing the device, saving the project again, and then when it opens at my home studio, choose the Firebox? Seems like I shouldn't have to do that, but I'm hoping that will be a workaround.
Will read your latest posts above in a few hours. Thanks all.

Before anyone opts to splash out on a copy of Windows 10, the free version is still available to customers who who use assistive technologies such as screen readers, onscreen keyboard etc.

Microsoft say 'We are not restricting the free upgrade offer to specific assistive technologies. If you use assistive technology on Windows, you are eligible for the free upgrade offer.'

USB 3.0...hmmm...you might want to check out this article from the PreSonus knowledge base.

Thanks Craig. I read the article you suggested and it's helpful.

I only have USB 3 Ports on my PC Audio Labs (Obedia), laptop. I was getting a weird "buzz" that as being recorded with any audio when I hooked the Audiobox directly to the onboard USB 3 ports, so I bought an adapter card to slide into the slot (also USB 3), and that cured the buzz.

I could now buy a USB 1 or 2 card to slide into the slot, but I'm not sure how that would help the problem, as the main issue is that the project won't open on the laptop when NOT connected to the Audiobox. But we know computers, so I guess it's worth a shot as you never know how or why something will work/not work.

Will report back later as I'm getting ready to see if the project bundle and the project file folder that I exported from the laptop while it was hooked to the Audiobox at the studio, will now open on my home studio desktop.

Also, thanks Songroom and everyone else up there. I appreciate your help.

Can you please indicate whether or not these computers are running with patch-current Windows Update maintenance?

Also, were any of these computers tweaked in attempts to optimize for streaming audio?

I have an AudioBox 1818VSL, and have also just yesterday worked on a friend's music laptop that he uses a smaller AudioBox interface with, and I have NEVER had occasion where Sonar would not open a project when the audio interface was not connected.  It just yells about no audio device and tosses up a silent bus message.  It sounds like something behind the scenes is messed up.

Lastly - anytime I create a backup folder for a project, when I KNOW I will be editing any audio clips, I ALWAYS make sure the backup has the Copy All Audio option checked, so that each project folder version of the project has its own copy of all audio.  Otherwise, it will refer back to the audio clips from their original location.  I would be curious as to whether or not you are using the Copy All Audio when saving a project off.

Thanks. I will remember and check that save all Audio tip, but I actually was trying to open the project on the actual laptop that I had recorded the project on, just without the Audiobox connected, which is at the studio and I had brought the laptop to my home studio that doesn't have the Audiobox (I have a Presonus Firebox, but didn't think to hook that up, but will try).

Yes, when I boot Sonar I get, "There are no audio devices for the current driver model on you system. Please go to Edit/Perferences/Audio/Playback and Recording and choose a different driver model". I OK that, and Sonar boots, but the Projects just "hang" while trying to load.

No, these machines are not optimized for streaming.

No, I can't do a Windows Update on my Win 78 Pro 64 Bit 16 Gig of RAM laptop since Aug 2015 because of unknown issues. After several hours of researching and trying various FIXES, I still can't update, but I figured I wouldn't need to because this is audio/video only laptop.

Thanks again. Gonna go try to hook the Firebox to the laptop and see what happens.

When you mentioned August 2015, it reminded me about some Visual Studio 2015 run time libraries associated with Sonar.

I am wondering if there is some Windows maintenance that the current Sonar needs/expects to be in place.

While the link above refers to a registration issue you hadn't indicated, the article DOES contain the means by which you can manually download and install a set of Visual Studio 2015 updates, that MAY improve your ability to process.

It should be a pretty simple matter to try it out.  You can also create a System Restore Point prior to installing the Visual Studio 2015 updates, if you find yourself wanting or needing to back that out.  (It should also be able to be uninstalled through Control Panel).

I hope the above helps,
