I use samples of real cymbals. Just plop the .wav file in the time line where I need it.

You can't beat the real thing but programming cymbal hits with a lot of notes in a short period of time with a step in velocity between each note plus a general rise and fall in the velocity pattern will create a reasonable sound. Anything you can do to kill the attack of the hits will help.
It can be done.

Something else to consider...
Many here still seem to like the venerable
SI Drums
. Maybe find some cymbals there (or in Addictive Drums, or Sound Center) and layer them. Experiment with reversing, stretching, velocity, and automating the volume.
