i am new here but i have been using sonar 8 for a few years and for the life of me i cant seem to figure out how to split clips without it adding a click sound at the beginning of the clip that was split.  has anyone had this issue? is there a setting i might have wrong? i cant seem to figure out how to split a clip clean so i can past it and not have that click at the beginning of it.

Hi,
there are  two ways to deal with that clipping sound:

1. If the damage is already there, do a little Fade-in /out at the clip. You can do that by using the smart tool (star) and grab the clip at the upper. You will see a little fade icon... Move it to the right until the wave starts at the zero-flatline. At the end of the clip, it is the same procedure, just go left.
2. In the preferences you can choose between splitting clips directly at the position you choose OR tell SONAR, that it do the cut at the next "zero-crossing" I can't tell you the exact naming of the fields, because I have a localized version. It should be something like "Alignment" and "Patter/Raster arrange".

Nevertheless, the reason is, that you split the clip at a position where the level does not equals null. As a result, you have a very fast attack - a crack. You can see it, if you magnify the beginning/end of the clip.

thanks. i have used the fade trick to some success but sometimes it ups the background noise since it is essentially overlapping sounds but i wasnt aware of the zero crossing so i am going to educate myself about that and see if that is a better way to go. thank you.

now my question is if how do you match up splitting at a zero crossing and still being able to split it at the beginning of a measure so you can past it a couple of times?

In a case like that you need to add a very slight fade-in. The "Slow In" curve will give the most effective click reduction in the shortest amount of time, you need only a few milliseconds.

Also, split at zero is microscopic - nowhere close to even a hemidemisemiquaver (LOL!) It shouldn't make much difference with you timing or looping.

I looked in preferences and cannot see this setting, where exactly is it?
