I'm using this:  http://www.tobias-erichsen.de/software/loopmidi.html

it's 32 bit (I believe) but has worked reliable and stable under 64 bit for at least 2 years

and it's free

There are still a few details to work out, like connecting the X2 audio out to the Platinum audio in in order to record the soft synth audio. LoopBe has a program that does this, or I can just wire a pair of outs on my I/O to a pair of ins.

Thanks Pharo - I didn't realise loopbe had a virtual audio driver as well! I am a big fan of loopbe30 and I have been wishing for a decent virtual audio patchbay solution. I am guessing it is wdm rather than asio, but will check it out.

For virtual audio, I use Voicemeeter Banana. Works great with SONAR/ASIO.

For virtual MIDI, I use LoopBe1 to feed Hauke Menges' Sundog Studio (a separate app; no VST version) output into SONAR; the latest update (v2.5) is excellent BTW.

Thanks John. Banana looks great, but I need more channels. I don't need any eq or gain control; just a patchbay that creates virtual outputs and allows you to link them to hardware. I use a combination of Loopbe 30 and the excellent Bome Midi Translator suggested by Rob[at]sound-rehab to do the same with midi.

I will certainly have a play with Sundog Studio -  looks like fun:)
