Like the old drum machines, I'm not figuring out a way to do loop recording, preserve all that's recorded and hear it layer up as I'm adding new stuff on top.  I only hear the last full "loop" as I record...nothing previous (in the same take).

Make sense??

You need to be in over right mode. Go to preferences recording options

Pretty sure "sound on sound" is what you are shooting for, actually. Are all the takes ending up on the recording but you can't here them all WHILE recording? Or is just the last pass ending up on the recording?

This...overwrite erases each previous pass. I want to hear the cumulative takes AS i record them

No..I use SOS but only hear what I'm recording. When in record mode and loop starts over at the beginning again, I cant monitor my previous passes. ...unlike a common sequencer.

Yes it makes sense to me, like a "looper". Like a very simple Gibson Echoplex Digital Pro.

Since you mention drum machines I think it works with MIDI, but not audio.

I'll try SoS with midi. But I'd like to have this feature with my analog inputs. .
Any other solutions? ??

I like looping and used an EDP for years, now I use Ableton Live

I would like to see it in Sonar. It would be nice to have the layers as take lanes.
