You will have problems with no matter what DAW you choose until you get your system setup properly. It always comes down to simple things like drivers for your interface, audio settings on your pc, sometimes video, power management if you have a laptop, USB issues. Win10 is the best platform for SONAR so far, and Platinum is the best version of SONAR so far. But it does so very much, it's hard to get a good grasp on it, but once you do, you will find it very easy to do most basic and middle ground tasks. Every DAW is the same. You have to get to know it, and the only way to do that, is to actually do some real work. It's like being a musician. Unless you just get out and play, you can stay in your bedroom and get no where (unless you are Van Halen, who seems like that is mostly what he DID do!!). So give yourself a project. A song you want to record, a band you want to record. Whatever. And then get on here, put up your equipment specs, and let these guys help you to get up and running, then get into the tutorials in the Cake University or just Youtube everything you want to learn. It's all out there. You may still yet change to another DAW. That's cool. Everyone finds the DAW that suits them in the end. I prefer this one. I wanted to prefer Pro Tools, because I spent so much money and time and because everyone said I had to, but now I'm putting out albums instead of continually wrestling with the software. I could never get my head around Cubase for example. Gave up.

Put up your specs, and your issues, and get up and running properly, then make up your mind on the DAW.

This sounds like inadequate hardware or the OP is running at too high settings for what their hardware is capable of, e.g. bit depth and frequency, possibly ASIO buffering. Some VSTs e.g. Omnisphere become extreme resource hogs at higher settings and can cause instability unless your system is meaty enough to feed them properly.

I'm on Win 10 and other than a couple of utterly rotten bugs in very specific circumstances in Sonar Platinum it is stable.

I had quite a few issues with Windows 10, but they are all related to my anti-virus programs. I'm not sure if this is why you might be experiencing issues, but if it might help, here's my tale:

I was originally using Kaspersky Anti-virus, which ran beautifully for me on Windows 7. But after upgrading Kaspersky (to the new Pure version) and Windows (from 7 to 10,) began a period of time where Sonar Platinum in particular became unusable. I had pretty much every glitch you could imagine encountering and more often than not, couldn't even get it to open without crashing. I didn't have the same trouble with other DAW's like FL and Studio One, but for some reason Sonar was held up or blocked almost every time I tried to run it.

I did a search and found that some people (not all) were experiencing a problem with Kaspersky, where it ignores user file and program exclusions and just blocks everything. I did a reinstall and even manually re-clicked the safety level exclusions, but still had major issues with Sonar. It culminated with not even being able to get google chrome to open, so in the end I got rid of Kaspersky and tried Bit Defender. It was better for most things, I could actually open Sonar but it would take a while to load up and I was still having trouble with stability.

I placed exclusions in Bit Defender for Sonar's folder and the Command Centre as well and then ran the Command Centre as Administrator to install the latest update. I ran Sonar as Administrator to open it up and for the first time in two months, it opened in seconds and there hasn't been a hitch since.

I was also finding my Quad Capture ASIO drivers would disappear from time to time, forcing me to restart. The fix was to place my Quad Capture file folder in the file exclusions as well. This was happening in other DAWs as well as Sonar, not something I ever had to bother with in Windows 7, but for some reason I had to now.

Note: I also found that placing file extension exclusions for loops, instruments, WAVs and NCW (native instruments sample files), made the start up of some of my samplers so much quicker. I was getting regular hang ups with large files, that would take forever to load and sometimes lead to a crash.

I'm not sure if this is the fix for you? But it might be something to look at before doing the whole unistall/reinstall schemozzle.

I used a laptop for a year and a half it was a Alienware 2011 ,m18x r1 ,2960xm ,32 gb , dual 6990m . The laptop did not get along with SPLAT and I had drop outs and everything under the sun if not daily then every couple days . Eventually I had enough and decided to swap to my 2011 desktop 2011 also 980x , rampage iii extreme, 24 gb , dual gts 450 and SPLAT loves it , honestly I can't believe looking back at the difference between 2 different PCS and how different SPLAT runs between them both ( polar opposites ) , I think SPLAT decides if the system is worthy or not and in my experience I have learnt through the world of frustration that's it's always hardware , drivers , that need to be looked at first .

Honestly there was a point looking back where I remember my thoughts through those dark days ( was it win 10 , or drivers , or the Babyface with the m18x , or splat , or me , or them and it was just the hardware combination .

Good luck .

The best advise I can give anyone is...you cant expect to run sonar on something like this:

and not have problems.

hi everyone , firstly  thank you for taking your time to reply my post . Much appreciated !

I"m using HP pc , intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3550 CPU @3.30hz 3.30 ghz , 16 gb ram. Upgraded to win 10 home .
I only have a korg M50 connected to my pc , no audio interface . For my audio driver i use asio4all . I  have other softsynths such as east west gold edition , komplete 9 , rapture pro, strum Gs2 , addictive drum 1 and 2 ,

By the way what is the best settings for the buffer size ? is 6.5msec the best ? I encountered latency problem when i was doing music scoring for a short video. I shifted the slider almost to the extreme left ( Fast )

And no , i didn't try to do a clean installation of win 10 , i just upgraded from win 7 to 10 .

Will prefer  to stick to sonar though all my friends are all mac users .

Hi. I suspect the reason for your drop outs might be your internal soundcard. Have you tried to switch to WDM/KS, MME or WASAPI? It might work well for playback, but for recording, I recommend a dedicated Audio Interface.
All the best.

And regarding Mac. SONAR is due to release a Mac (Alpha) version this autumn.

I think the upgrade 7 to 10 is fine, a lot of people have done that here, but asio4all, win10 and Splat do not get along very well, even though the latest survey results suggest a lot of people do use asio4all apparently. It would be interesting to survey those users and find out if there are common themes here for troubles such as yours. But, even though I will probably get shot down here, my biggest advice to you is to do away with the m-audio card, asio4all, and get something like an RME, Focusrite, Tascam etc, audio interface, with midi in/out, running a dedicated device driver, and hook your m50 and everything else up that way. I really don't think you will be able to move forward unless you do.

edit - I'm not sure how I decided you had an M-audio card lol!!  some other thread maybe... I'm working whilst on here. Anyway. Sorry. But I guess you get my intention.  cheers. Dave.

There have been very different experiences from updating Win 7 to 10.
For me it works flawless, but there have been several threads arround
regarding different problems like crackles aso. A lot of that problems disappead through a
clean installation.
And , like mentioned above, the onboard audio chip and Splat is not a good team,
it´s like a ferrari on  bicycle tires or so.
