  • VST Plug-in bypass automation, is it possible?

Hi all,
I'm thinking to switch to Sonar from Cubase, but I have the following question: is it possible to completely bypass a plug-in via automation in a track? For example, I'd like to bypass a plug-in to free CPU resources when audio is not present.
I know that VST3 plug-ins perform this operation automatically, but I use VST2 plug-ins.
In Cubase, you can activate the "Bypass" automation line to do this action, is it possible in Sonar too?

Mau

Depends on the plugin, and whether it has a bypass control that's exposed for automation. As far as I'm aware, there's no way to automate Sonar's own bypass for plugins.

Does work fine for VST2 as long as the control exists, though.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply.
In Cubase, you can automate bypass also if the plug-in has not its own bypass button, it's a sort a "default" parameter present for all plug-ins.
For me it's a great feature...

Yeah, I agree it would be nice to have in Sonar.

Swapping VST's in and out of memory would be a substantial system demand, so I assume that VST's stay memory resident in Sonar and in Cubase even when they are bypassed. So this bypass would  not free up system memory. I am frankly not sure how much CPU activity a VST demands when it is not processing audio (as opposed to processing silence), so the benefit of this bypass is unclear to me. What problem are you having using Cubase that this solves?

Try freezing instead...unless the plugin is on a bus... <sad face>

The way I understand it VST2s always process even when there is no audio in the track?
