Good match? I'm hearing it's all about the drivers?  Considering this unit:

This would be with Sonar 8, if it matters.  Win 7 Pro 64x.

thx

No longer a fan of M-Audio because of driver support.  If you want to spend some money and will pay for itself over the years and best driver support ever would be an RME product.

If you are looking for a budget USB audio interface (i.e. the 2 input stuff < $200), the best recommendations for Sonar that I have seen on these forums, based on driver compatibility and latency are the Tascam US-2x2 ($119 US) or the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 2nd Gen ($149 US).

I have a legacy M-Audio interface that they quit making drivers for in 2009.  They only support their current products.  I'm just lucky that their Windows 7 drivers still work in Windows 10.  If I need a quick USB replacement I will probably choose one of the above.

For a larger studio setup with lots of inputs and a bigger budget, you have some great choices (MOTU, RME, etc).  But for the budget end, good ASIO drivers and pre-amps seem to be the limiting factor.  So that tends to narrow the list down fast.

Interesting . . . while I could never dis M-Audio, since I had one of their PCI audio interfaces perform for me very well for 15 years, though after my Win 10 update, it became clear I needed something newer, so I have found the Steinberg UR22-MkII to be very solid with Sonar Platinum on my laptop. (On my desktop I went with M-Audio M-Track QUAD) You are correct, it is all about the drivers, especially matching the drivers to your current OS and Sonar version, but always keep the future in mind, if you ever upgrade your Sonar version or your OS version.
