  • MIDI Rotary Movements Have Effect While Playing, But Not Once Recorded

Hello Everyone,

I am unsure how to get my MIDI CC data from my rotaries to work after the part has been recorded.

I record a track playing MIDI notes and moving a rotary which controls CC#19.  In ACT, CC#19 is mapped to the filter cutoff in a softsynth.  As I am playing and recording, I hear the changes....  BUT when I play back the recording, it looks like the CC#19 data (which I see got recorded in the PRV), is no longer effecting the filter cutoff parameter in the softsynth.

Any help would be much appreciated!

Thanks,
Adam

i *think* what might be happening here is that the softsynth is NEVER responding to CC#19... maybe ACT is somehow getting the information from the controller to the softsynth without using CC#19, but since my controller knob is set to CC#19 it is dumping CC#19 into the MIDI track, but there IS no link between CC#19 and the softsynth parameter.

This is VERY confusing.

here is what i think should happen:

you're using the page URL (above) not the image URL https://i.imgur.com/DNwTzBW.png

Does it work if you record using the control within the softsynth itself - and if so, how do the recorded events differ?

OHH imgr changed how they give you the link, now the default link URL goes to their page (i have to add .jpg - annoying), but thanks for that.

OK, so i found out what is going on here, but don't know what to do about it.

I see there is 2 ways to control a synth parameter....   Use ACT, or use MIDI CC# (with MIDI Learn).

I am not sure why one is better than the other, but here is my issue:

As you can see here, by default Rotary 8 (R8) is mapped to the OSC 2 Fine Tune parameter, and this is able to control it (via ACT).

I hit record and then I get the following MIDI CC information in the PRV, but it DOES NOT control the synth parameter anymore.  It is only writing MIDI CC#19 data (which maps to nothing).

Once I do the following, it works again:

So then I ask, what is the purpose of ACT if it doesn't map the MIDI CC and the synth together once recorded?

I just recently noticed, that if I check this "W" on the synth, it records the automation in an automation lane.  I guess that would work.  It's not MIDI CC# data, I think I would like MIDI CC# data though as it can be edited in the event list if necessary.

I also see now if i use automation, it STILL records MIDI CC#19 because that is what my controller is set to.

It is useless and not doing anything.  Is there anyway to disable it from recording the CC changes if i am already recording automation?

Yes. Start playback when you want to "write" automation, not record.

"Automation Write" should be done during playback, not during record.
