I'm doing a complete SPLAT re-installation on a new system with a 240GB SSD system drive, and a 1TB Standard drive.

I used to move all samples, VST's, templates, projects, etc. on the 1TB drive (not that Sonar installation makes this easy).
I'm now wondering what people would recommend I keep on the SSD drive to take advantage of its speed?

- VSTs?
- Project files (Working mixes?)
- templates?

I wish Sonar made this easier. We should be able to, for example, set the VST directory during installation. But I guess thats another thread?

Thanks for any advice!

That's exactly what I do - VST, present working projects and templates. Large sample files such as Rapture Pro (not easy) UVI and Native instrument etc files go on a separate drive. Older project files are stored on other non ssd drives.

You can set certain system paths in the Command Centre BEFORE you install anything.

Woah! Sonar is now lightening fast! NO clicks/pops when I start or stop playing, or when I turn on/off effects globally and everything loads in seconds!

This is THE way to go if you own Sonar!

I'm just wondering: what application did you use to move all your files to the new computer? Acronis? Paragon? Something else? Any issues?

I looking to do the same probably within the year. ADK will probably build my computer, but I'll have to move most of the program files and samples myself.

And congratulations and good luck with your new computer!

I used a Samsung SSD and migrated the old C drive straight over using the migration software that came with the SSD. It took about 90 minutes. I didn't expect it to work so I took all the backups and an image of the old disk, etc., but the migration worked fine.

ive been saying for years, even before SSD's came out that people should keep their main installation, VST's, Projects, Settings on their main C drive (with their OS) but I got the old " it doesn't matter".
it does matter. it also matters if your main OS is on a 1 TB or a 500GB HD. the platters are so large in a 1TB, its hard for the disk read to keep up. smaller platters, faster reads, how ever HD's and SSD's are being made more efficient now than they were years back.

Thanks, Jerry.

I didn't realize that SSD's came with migration software. That's got to be a boon. It's great to hear that there were no issues either. I get really leary of all the software that allows for only a certain number of installations on a certain number of computers and such; I'm sure you sympathize. It's clearly my biggest fear in building a new computer.

I've got another issue, however, with a little command prompt box that occurs very quickly and disappears. It is probably from either some lame driver update s/w I had or my AMD video card (the driver of which cannot be updated anymore). So, I am also afraid of copying this to the new computer. Changing to another video card should stop the command prompt box if it's driver-related. If it's connected to the lame driver update s/w I'll have to be more careful (although I long ago uninstalled it).

This computer doesn't owe me a thing; it was built in 2011 (I think) around a i7-2600K oc'ed to 4.5 gHz. It's still pretty fast. In about 10 months, give or take, I'll probably be in the market. I won't have the cash before then. I plan on at least a 1 TB for the system SSD and either one 2 TB or two 1 TB for the sample SSD's; I use lots of sampled instruments.

That sounds great. Which exact drive did you use? And, what was the migration software called? Thanks..

Most migration software is made my Acronis.  I have True Image and when trying to use migration software it tells me to uninstall your previous version of Acronis.

I'm waiting for those 1TB SSD to really drop in price for VSTs that stream samples.
