The only issue is whether the old PCI 2496 is compatible with the new motherboard (and I assume Win 10).

Best option is a (Win 10 compatible) USB connected recording interface device.  Some inexpensive two channel ones that won't break the bank.

My new MB is a Gigabyte gaming 7 GA-Z170X, I7 6700, 32 gb Ram, 950 nvidia card, samsung evo pro ssd.

I'm running Win 7 Pro 64, BTW. Don't like 10!

Creative Drivers are well known to conflict with Sonar, Not sure if this has changed but there used to be 100's of threads on that subject a few years back. But as we slowly all swicthed to proper audio interfaces the Sound Blaster posts have slowy faded into oblivion.

CJ always put it best- " Take the SB card to the highers building in town and throw it into the traffic at rush hour"
Another good one was " Why would you use a $20 sound card with $500 software?"

DO your self a favour and purchase a proper audio interface,, not a sound card. Sonar will love you for it.

Decide if you primarily want to record music or play games.  If you just want to fart around with music but mainly play games, stick with the SB.  I used an Audigy for playback and recording 10-15 years ago.  It worked, the sound quality was good but the crapware that came with it was a pain and the latency was bad.  I don't know how much has changed - it is a gaming card.  You'll just have to put up with a lot of stuff when recording.

If your main interest is in music, get a real music interface.

Hint, you can use 2 cards, although that opens up another can of worms.  But if you have only one high end computer and want to game and make beautiful music, that could work well for you.  And some interfaces will work well for both.  Don't try TC KOnnect, tho.  For years people would come onsite and complain that their $1700 interface didn't switch between music and games or youtube or porno cleanly but their $5 built-in card did.  I found it worked really well for recording, tho. ;-)

Thanks, Guys

I don't play games,  I bought this MB for it's quality. My recording needs are simple:

Someone sends me a stereo audio track and I record a steel track for them. I need 1 mic input to record my daughter occasionally.

My old setup that worked well was the Delta 2496 card and a cheap Behringer MX 602A mixer. 1 xlr phantom mic input, 2 inputs for the steel (stereo).  3 way EQ on each channel was nice, also.  I also run the PC audio out into the mixer and output the mixer to a pair of KRK V4 Series II powered speakers.

I'm willing to upgrade if it makes things simpler.

BTW, I only record once in a while but like to be setup if someone needs help.

thx

Johnny,  The sound card is built into the MB. How do I disable it?  In the Bios or device manager? Will that get rid of the SB software?  I guess I would lose my SPDIF out but I don't use it anyway.

I had a SoundBlaster sound card and it interfered with Sonar.  As your SoundBlaster is on the motherboard you can disable it in the BIOS or disable it in the Device Manager.  Easiest way would be in the Device Manager and then if/when you want to use it with regular PC sound just enable it.  My current system has Realtek PC sound and it does not interfere.  I don't have to disable it when I use Sonar and my recording interface unit.  Just set up Sonar to only use whatever recording interface you buy (such as the Focusrite 2i2 I recommended on the Steel Guitar forum).

It might work, but it's a Behringer.

Try looking at units from Focusrite, Presonus etc - they have better drivers

I suggested a Focusrite 2i2 (second generation) to him on a different post.

Yes most important to Sonar is top notch audio drivers. The Behringer will work but they have pretty low quality drivers ( if any) on those little mixers .. I have one myself and it uses Generic audio codex. Just fine for playback or a straight up stereo recording into Audacity , but multi track recording will end up out of sync to other tracks.

Top of my list for budget interfaces is the Tascam 2x2 http://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/US2X2
And check out this sale price...$120.
It has the option of plug in power which the Focusrite 2i2 and 2i4 do not. I have a Focurite 6i6 which is solid drivers but the Pre amps I do not like. Next on my list is the Tascam
