No, it won't affect your software. But do take the normal precautions against static electricity (which can destroy the motherboard in a second):
1). Leave the PC plugged into A/C power, but turn off the power switch on your power supply. Now hold in the PC's main power button a few seconds to drain any residual charge from the board.
2). Before touching any part of the motherboard, touch a metal section of your case. That'll ground you and discharge any static you have built up. Or, if you have an antistatic wrist-strap, use that.
3). Upgrade/Replace the Ram. Close the case, turn the power supply switch back on, and you're in business!
