  • Anyone else having problems with the Track Manager? Tracks not hiding/sync state issues?

Howdy, all. So this is another new one since upgrading to Lexington (from Foxboro). I've never noticed any problems with the Track Manager before (and I mean the thingie in the Track View Options menu that allows you to show/hide tracks in the project and their statuses as well as set whether these show/hide status applies to both the Track View and Console View).

I just shifted into mixing mode on a project after finishing up my bulk editing when I realized a whole pile of my "scratch" and tracking/editing tracks were still visible in the Console View despite the fact I had previously hidden them and have the "Keep TV and CV in sync" option selected.

Basically once I am done tracking and editing I take my best material/comps, put them in new empty tracks then archive/hide the originals (saves resources and screenspace and makes any more creative editing on the finals easier).

Usually I can just uncheck a folder in the Track Manager and it will all go away (from both TV and CV). For some reason this time the folders disappeared from the TV but remained in the CV. This may have been due to the fact the folders were closed in the Track Manager when I deselected the folder but I am unsure if that's what actually did (was a while ago) and that's not really the isssue.

1) Once I realized this was going on I returned to the TM to try to hide the tracks. I opened the hidden folders to expose the track list and they were all still selected (so in the TV I guess since the folder was closed when I hid it, maybe, the tracks were already out of sight so the folder disappeared making me think the tracks were hidden... but they weren't and still in the CV). The problem comes in when I tried to deselect the tracks one at a time. I hid deselected them, pressed OK and nothing. Go back into the manager and they're reselected. I tried showing the folder again and deselect. Same thing, it reverts back to the previous state. I closed and reopened Sonar and kept trying all sorts of various combos of these actions (showing/hiding in various closed/open folder states inside the TM and TV). Eventually I shook something loose and finally got rid of those tracks.

So something weird is going on there. Never had these issues before.

2) Since Lexington any time I have hidden something I get a horizontal black line across the Track View. It stays in the same position on the screen if I scroll up/down/left/right (it's a little ragged/irregular so I can tell it's not scrolling left/right). Restarting SOnar gets rid of it.

Soooo yeah, just wondering if there have been similar reports of the Track Manager going funky on other users. I've been running into a lot of little things like this in Lexington and am hoping Manchester will fix them (and if not earlier versions) so I'd be interested in the versions anyone having these issues are on as well.

Cheers and thanks in advance.

Hi Beep.

I have ALWAYS found track manager to be "funky"

It usually works ok in Track View but not in Console View. I can select/deselect whatever tracks I want but clicking ok does absolutely nothing.

Sometimes.

Other times it will work fine.

When it doesn't work, I find that going into Track view and making a couple of changes to track visibility, THEN go into Console view and it's ok and will work.

Sometime it appears that track visibility doesn't "stick" but quite often this is due to me making changes to a locked screenset <doh>

Thanks for chiming in, Jonesey.

I've never experienced this before (and I use the TM frequently due to my compulsion of loading up tracks with takes and then wanting them "gone" without being deleted) but TBH I think I may have slightly altered my useage.

As in maybe the problem is the folders being hidden were closed in the TV and TM... thus the folder gets hidden but not the tracks (so they go away in the TV because they weren't visible anyway but remained in the CV because it unfortunately still does not obey folders).

By doing that I may have exposed a "bug" that confuses the TM which then corrupted that area of the project data.

I could have sworn though that I've done it this way in the past without issue.

The black line thing is definitely new though and I was going to post about it when it first occurred a couple weeks ago so the combo of issues made me think something has been broken. It's not huge but it is definitely a distracting visual obstruction when trying to look at my clips/waves and requires a restart.

Anyway... just another odd occurance on a growing list with this release. I really wasted quite a bit of time trying to force things so my CV strips were in sync and what I actually want to use for my mix.

Ever since upgrading to Lex I've definitely been getting sidetracked by these little issues when before I never had any problems at all (since X2).

I thought maybe some of it was due to going back to 96khz for a session I was doing for someone else but this project is 44.1 so that ain't it.

Thanks again for the input. Looks like I'm really gonna have to do a lot of testing of the various versions to see if I can get things stable again. I really don't want to go back to "pre aux" tracks versions because those are going to be useful to me (and the new Solo improvements will be crucial to their usefulness as well).

Just blathering now.

Thanks again, man.

Cheers.

I've experienced this many times in the past, it's not a new issue. But, I think I've finally figured out what works.

Trying to apply Track Manager from Console View is a losing proposition. You need to do all your TM changes in Track View, then check "Keep Track/Console Visibility States in Sync."

But...TM can also be a trap if you hide something that's muted, and it has data beyond the end point of the song. This can lead to the infamous "SONAR doesn't end when project ends" syndrome and you'll never see where the data is because you can't see the track.

Also, when saving a project sometimes I wonder why it takes up so much space. Then I remember a have a bunch of older, bounced two-track mixes hidden.

Pretty much the main way I use TM these days is to hide MIDI tracks for instruments where I've already rendered to audio. I've become much more aggressive about cleaning up tracks as I go along.

Well I'll certainly try that later on Craig, thanks for the tip.

Hi, Craig (sorry I have not replied to some other replies you've made to me the past day or so... not really in "forum mode" the past couple days).

Generally I don't hide tracks until I Archive them so that should avoid any export wackiness (maybe not but I've never experienced that stuff) and of course I get real paranoid about hidden tracks that may be still audible or otherwise affecting the project (which again Archive should ensure does not happen).

That was one thing that was a little confusing/obnoxious about this because I was looking at some muted tracks in CV but they were actually Archived (and Muted). So I wasn't sure if I'd kept them for a reason, tried to hunt them down in the TV and couldn't find them then checked in the TM using the CV track names as a cross reference which finally exposed what was going on.

Actually I was loading track icons, realized I had WAY too many tracks in CV and did not see the icons in TV and THAT led me to hunt them down in TM. It was a real mess and then I could not manage to hide them as normal.

Whatevs... that's just mostly restating what happened.

As noted this is a weird one because the TM has always worked without fail for me.

That black line is a little concerning (and annoying) as well. It reminds me of the graphical glitches I used to get in X2 when projects were starting to corrupt but it's been occurring on two projects consistently now every time I hide stuff.

Anyhoo... if this is an old problem mayhaps it's time that gets fixed up and this can get moved to the Problem Reports area (although I am trying to decipher whether this has been happening more in the newer releases).

I've always kind of wanted more control in the TM as well... like the ability to Archive tracks there and maybe MSR functions too. That's another thread though.

Cheers and thanks.

Don't forget your shortcuts Beep - shift & h in track view makes ALL tracks visible

I'm currently on Manchester (still) but I'll test it next time I update if I remember.

However I updated a bunch of times since posting this so maybe it has been fixed in Manchester (I'll check later).

TBH for a second I thought maybe it HAD been fixed because I have not experienced it in so long (and I do this type of thing like every couple days or so). Then I REALLY thought about it and realised since I posted this I had been using the workaround of just making sure when Hiding a folder of tracks in the Track Manager to make sure the folder is open. Seriously it had become an almost unconscious behavior because it's just one glance in the TM to see if a folder is open or not, if it ain't it's one click to open it. Then it can be hidden as expected and stay in sync in the TV and CV.

Pretty funny. Anyway I'll check.

I CAN say that stupid and annoying black line that occurs when hiding a folder from the TM still happens and still requires a restart of the program to remove.

Anywho... I'm actually in ultra crazy guy artsy OCD guy music mode right now so I'm going to go be THAT kind of weird for a bit.

Remind me if I don't get back to this or no ones else tests it in the newest versions (which would be more helpful than my behind the times arse).

Cheers.

I am on the most recent Splat update and I have had the same issues you have pointed out.  I was making some screen sets, one for guitars, one for drums etc. I noticed that on some of the screensets there were tracks that I had thought I had hidden.  So I selected them, maybe from the CV, pulled up track manager and tried to hide the tracks. They did get hidden but then all the other tracks that were previously hidden were now visible. It took me quite a while to get all the tracks hidden and un-hidden the way I wanted them.

It does seem like it could have been related to calling up track manager from both the TV and CV but it doesn't seem like this should be an issue.
