  • Does Sonar load projects faster if vst's are frozen?

Would Sonar load projects much quicker if all vst's were frozen, or is it just the track data that is frozen and no time saving is to be had? Again I am thinking of using it live..

Thanks

35 people have looked and no-one has any sort of response?
Didn't realise it was such a tough question that has everyone stumped!

Seems to load faster for me if my VSTi instances are frozen.

Well your first post is a little incomplete. meaning,
1- have you tried it yourself yet?
2- have you already tried it and want to know others thoughts on it ?

the first answer would be easy, load it up and test it out and you could answer your own question.
the second, I find projects containing mostly audio load faster than projects that contain soft synths and sometimes a lot of FX.
however, I haven't found freezing tracks to speed up load time, only to free up more CPU power.
because even though the tracks have been bounced per say (frozen) it seems sonar still loads the VST's the same as if they were loading them in a project using those VST's.

essentially on paper it appears it should speed up the load time, I just haven't seen it and my projects load rather quickly (10-15 seconds)

hope this helped.

Yes - projects will load faster with vsti tracks frozen as the synths are disconnected and do not load. I use Sonar live all of the time. Either bounce the track to audio and then disconnect the synth, or simply freeze the synth if you prefer.

Thank you tenfoot, chuck and bapu :-)

I've also found freezing tracks (especially VST Synth plugins) makes Sonar project load times much quicker. I have a couple of very large sample libraries that I use all the time, one of them takes a good 5 minutes to actually come up. If I freeze the track and save the project, next time the Sonar project loads way quicker, instead of over 5 minutes . . . it's less than 20 seconds. After opening the project, unfreezing those tracks still takes 5 minutes to load the library, but at least the project is open and ready to go.

Yes, so long as you have 'Unload Synths on Disconnect' enabled (the default) in synth properties, frozen synths will not be loaded into RAM on opening the project which will save time, depending on how big the synth's footprint is. A true 'synthesizer' may not use much RAM, but most of what are referred to today as 'synths' are sample players, and if they load samples in RAM, as opposed to streaming them from disk, loading projects that use them could save a significant amount of time as noynekker confirmed.

Cool, that's terrific. Maybe Splat can be used live then, instead of going through the process of creating MP3s. Means if I want to tweak a part or indeed drop it totally, I can do this at will, even just temp changes on the night, so to speak.

At the moment I use an app called Cantabile 3, hosting VSTs and mp3 bakcing tracks for gigs, and it's been getting frustrating that if, for example, I feel like having no guitars play for a particular song for a change, as it is an mp3 it is impossible to do this as a "spur of the moment" thing.
