  • Does Sonar load projects faster if vst's are frozen? (p.2)

Loads little more quickly, because Sonar does't have to load all he samples for frozen tracks, also less Tax for the CPU... the only disadvantage is that the project increase its size because the size of the Wav file  generated from each frozen Vst Instrument

Kontakt (for me) takes nearly a minute to load so in that case definitely yes.

I like to freeze all tracks because in time it is more likely my audio tracks will work where my instruments and their settings may not. Especially after an instrument update. At lease I have the audio files to fall back on, a second line of song security.

Cool, that's terrific. Maybe Splat can be used live then, instead of going through the process of creating MP3s. Means if I want to tweak a part or indeed drop it totally, I can do this at will, even just temp changes on the night, so to speak.

That makes sense from your point of view ... you now have some flexibility ...at your gig ...

Another thing to consider ..which has nothing to do with your topic , yet it can turn out to be a nice little time saver for you at your gig

If you happen to have a set or a  group of tunes that you have played in a row really fast at your gig due to folks wanting to stay out on the dance floor for example ..
You may want to consider setting up a project in SONAR that consists of mixes of tunes that are battle tested and proven to have kept you happy ...

Here is what i mean by that is this ..

Create one SONAR audio project , take a few tunes that are mixed to your satisfaction , place your Songs / Mix's at
bar one or a few seconds down the time line ...make sure you have your songs titles in the tracks ..
What I mean by that is everything starting at the projects beginning ..not a bunch of tunes along the time line ...I have a reason
You may even decide to color code the tracks backgrounds to be able to recognize the genre...
Red could be Dance , Blue could be R & B ...rinse and repeat on all the other possible colors  ...

Now why would I suggest this ? ...you can now have a pre set play list of a number of songs all ready to go with the time it takes SONAR to load the  one project ....a lot less can go wrong ...as long as these tunes are a selection of tunes you want play within a set ...
Since your tunes are not host tempo dependent this approach can work very good ...if you need a song count off  just include it in your your song / mix

Now you may ask , what is the benefit of even trying this out ?

Reason 1 , you can play to each and every song real fast with out having to load them ..
The whole key to this is to use the exclusive Solo feature in SONAR
hit w on your computers keyboard , SONAR rewinds to the beginning of the project ...
to play a new tune just hit the solo button on the track that has the mix of the tune you want to play ...
in SONAR's exclusive solo mode  this song will be the only track that plays ....all others are muted

Reason 2 , it never hurts to have a back up plan ....

Reason 3, this / my approach is not meant to replace what your opening post has asked about as a workflow for you at your gig . Its true value lies in the fact that people can be very mercurial when under stress at a gig ...
You may be distracted , tired , or people are talking to you while you are setting up your next tune in SONAR  ..

this is meant to be a way for you to augment your workflow in a way where if you don't feel like messing around/ tweaking one project per tune on the stage  .... while your supposed to be performing ....you don't have to ...

Use what works discard the rest  ...if it works cool ...at some point you may find out through trail and error  that you may even have a nice little group of songs and  playlists going on all in one SONAR project

.......or you could just use the playlist, which whilst enabled will preload the next song for seamless playback if no delay is set.

The other huge and obvious advantage of using sonar live is the ablility to retain separate tracks for playback (kick, snare, bass etc) rather than a stereo mixdown for ultimate mixing flexibility. With each rack run to its own channel on a digital desk you are in playback heaven:)

I generally run approx 24 tracks with fx + midi control tracks for fx and lighting on a bog standard HP i7 laptop with 8 gig of ram and the playlist works without issue.

That said I have encountered what is evidently a fairly obscure problem with the playlist that appeared 3 updates ago, so I use update 03 2016 for live performance, hopefully only until Cakewalk regroup on support to resolve the issue. On the off chance you do run into an issue with the playlist crashing on certain projects, try rolling back to this version.

I'm creating a giant template for full symphony orchestra, containing dozens of tracks and many instances of Kontakt.
I realized that in Kontakt, even though I Purge All Samples, each active instance still uses a lot of RAM.
Thus, my strategy for this template is disconnect all synths; so even being a giant template, the loading is fast and the RAM will only be occupied insofar as I will need to use some orchestra suit.
