  • Hybridizing Staff View and Piano Roll tools?

Hiya Cakewalk, I've been a user since way back in the 20th century! I'm very happy with all the synth capabilities and audio tools/effects added over the years, but I'm curious if there are any plans to update the Staff View. I use it a ton, but I'm always needing to left click notes to reset lengths and velocities--or I need to run the Piano Roll at the same time to adjust them there. It's a chore to scroll left/right in both views while editing though.

I've seen staff views in other software that bring in piano roll elements, like showing a faint bar on each note that you can drag for length, and being able to turn on a beat grid. I would love to see Cakewalk add stuff like this to the Staff View!!  The ability to click with my mouse wheel and change velocities while looking at the staff would be a godsend.

Thanks for listening Cakewalk!

Hi arcadesonfire . . . you're preachin' to the choir here ! . . . your suggestion of a hybrid staff/PRV is a great idea.
I also spend a majority of my editing time in staff view, but I have found as you have, that many things are better accomplished in PRV view. So, I'm constantly going between the two views to do my editing. For now, these are the tools we're given, and I haven't heard any rumblings around the forum about staff view updates for quite a while.

All I can offer is my shortcuts (which you may or may not already know about) to make switching back and forth between the staff and PRV views, and midi editing more efficient:

1) use staff and PRV in the Multidock
2) to switch between views quickly . . . keyboard command . . . hold down Shift + Ctrl, and use left/right arrow keys to toggle between the views of the Multidock
3) to use multiple staff view tabs in the Multidock . . . right click on tab, select "lock contents" . . . then you can create other staff view tabs without disturbing the other ones.
4) select a note (or notes) in staff view . . . a lot of the edits can be done using "Event Inspector" in the Control Bar
5) keyboard shortcuts (square brackets) "["   and   "]"  to quickly transpose note(s) up and down an octave at a time

Hi. How about undocking SV / PRV, make half screen size. Open MD with SV / PRV, and adjust to fit the other. Save as screenset. Then you could switch with a keystroke. Would that work? Hope it helps.
All the best.

im not a staff view user at all. but I sure hope cakewalk does a couple updates to staff view to satisfy the long time staff view users. the SV users would be dancing in the streets.
I could be wrong but it almost seems as though they are fazing it out and putting more efforts towards the PRV.

Been using cakewalk since Pro audio 9. I would like to score some of my music but I think I would go with an external score editor to that. I do like your idea though. I would be interested in trying it.
I just don't see them putting to much focus to this area, but like I said, I could be wrong.

There was an interesting demo video for "something" (Notation, or a competitor maybe?) where they had entered realistic MIDI notes (not quantized) and converted it to staff and it became gobble-de-gook (tie/dots galore). That program also had an internal "quantize" to make the best staff representation of the notes played (without actually altering them). The result was impressive, and I think that is ultimately the issue with "mating" the two views.

IOW, this is also my same issue with step sequencers... people do not have the precision of robots. Unlike the SS which has a swing parameter, on the staff view a quarter note has highly defined ON/OFF points... so the question becomes "How far off those defined settings does the quarter note remain a quarter note?"

Someone may know of the video I mentioned (it was buried in a thread a year or two ago), but I have issues not seeing the staff view as a step sequencer (without swing).

I hope someone from the Cakewalk is reading this. I am also suffering the lack of possibilities in Staff View. To jump from SV to PRV during editing is quite annoying. I am Cakewalk user since DOS Version and tis area is always the weakness of the DAW. I am not expecting from Cakewalk to score my music, for this I am using Sibelius or Finale, however Cakewalk should consider an improvement for editing music in the Staff View.

I remember posting something similar many months ago. In fact, my interest in the staff view is not to score my music. Other specialized software are much better at that. I am more interested in using the SV to edit my midi data simply because music notation is more intuitive for me than PRV (sorry, I am a classically trained musician ...). Thus an "hybrid" SV + PRV would make a lot of sense. For example:
  • using crescendo and decrescendo to alter midi velocity and/or CC2/CC7/CC11 or any other midi controller with some kind of GUI to adjust the required parameters
  • idem for PPP to FFF annotation, accelerando that links to tempo map, etc.
  • legato to adjust note length until the next note (I know there is a CAL for that
  • Articulations that would trigger keyswitches, with soundsets or tables for most popular libraries (similar to what some notation software offer like Notion, Sibelius, Finale). At least something like Expression maps in Cubase would be a plus compare to drum maps.
I know I can do most of that with automation, envelopes, CAL, etc.

It's just that it would be more intuitive for trained musician like me. But no ig deal. I still use SPLAT and very happy with it.

FWIW, I usually float the Staff View above the docked PRV; I do 90% of the editing in the PRV, and just use the SV to confirm the displayed result is as-expected.

But my SV needs are admittedly limited. If you want to compose in the SV, that continues to be a challenge.
