The only tracks I "show" in track view are MIDI tracks and the AUDIO tracks are shown in Console view. The reason I do this is because the audio tracks just carry audio so they just clutter the track view.
 
My work happens in the MIDI tracks but NOW I can only show automation on the AUDIO tracks because AS SUGGESTED in another post, I should do away with instrument tracks and only use a split MIDI and AUDIO track.
 
Any way around this?  I just want MIDI tracks and plugin automation in the track view.

I am not sure I agree with the admonition about not using instrument tracks. That said, there is a drop down on the "Insert Soft Synth Options" dialog to specify where automation for the synth should go. This only affects synth automation though. Any audio plug-ins in an audio/instrument track FX rack, ProChannel or audio automation will only display in the audio/instrument track. 
 

It seems I'm gonna have to convert ALL the tracks back to Instrument tracks.  I gain a better workflow with a combined track than with separate tracks...

Personally, I use of mix of audio, instrument and MIDI tracks.

Yes. Type H for the Track Manager. When its window appears, click on Help for more info.

Clicking the AUDIO or MIDI toggle does not work all the time, I would repeatedly click the MIDI toggle and it will keep on highlighting the AUDIO channels - seems buggy

No, it works as it should, but you need to understand how to show and hide the tracks. What's highlighted isn't the important part, it's the boxes you uncheck. According to the help: In the list, check those tracks you would like displayed in the view in which you are working, and uncheck the rest. You can use SHIFT-click, CTRL-click, or the quick select buttons to select multiple modules; press the SPACEBAR to check or uncheck all the selected modules at once. Please note that the track display selections you make in the Track view do not affect those in the Console view and vice versa.
 
As with similar dialog boxes, to get rid of any highlights, click on a blank space in the dialog box. The way I'd do what you want is first, unfold any track folders. Then assuming everything's selected, I'd click the Audio button and either hit the space bar or uncheck one of the audio track buttons - they'll all uncheck. Now you'll see only MIDI and Instrument tracks. If you want you can also get rid of the instrument tracks, leaving only MIDI.
 
The Spacebar is your friend because it can check or uncheck all of a selected group or checkboxes.

The issue I have is getting the correct ones to highlight.  I know that spacebar enables/disables the tickboxes.
