Hi everyone,

Due to the midi function constantly crashing in my version of Adobe Audition 3.0, I've decided to make a switch to Sonar (bummer, as I love the Adobe interface). 

Having said that, I have a guitar track that I need to cut out a few bars of, and I cannot find a way to simply edit the wav file in Sonar X1! 

In Audition, it was super easy where I could double click on the track which would open an editor window where I could make any edits and then simply add the edited file straight back into the track. 

From what I've been able to do in Sonar, the track goes into a "loop creation mode" (pop out window) that has no select / cut / paste function.... while when I try to edit the track in the actual track window that contains all of the other tracks in the session, if I misjudge where I need to start or end an edit point, I cannot just extend the highlighted section that I want to cut out - I have to start all over again.

Am I missing something?

After about 6 months of on and off playing with Sonar (and reading the manual and watching a bunch of Youtube videos), I'm starting to have reservations about this software....

Any ideas or guidance would be appreciated!

Just use the spit tool to make the cuts where you need to and then move the audio together.  If you have then finished you can bounce it to a clip. The editing in Sonar is none destructive and you will end up with new audio files.  

In sonar you can split, trim, and move clips.  To split them you can set the now marker where you want to split and hit the 's' key.  You can allow use the smart tool (it is usually the default mode you are in), if you hold 'Alt' down and hold your mouse towards the bottom of a clip a scissor icon will appear. You can then click where you want the split to happen. You can also lasso or drag select the portion of the clip you want to delete and then hit the delete key.
 
You can then drag the split clips to where you want them, cross fade them, slip edit etc. by putting your mouse at the edge of the clip.

Editing with Sonar is 10 times faster as Adobe Edition or Wavelab. We digitaze thousends of tapes and restore them with Sonar - 10 times faster as other DAWs.
For example: if the mouse is over the track, you don't need to mark or click. Just press "ALT" and you can split and cut with one mouseclick. With "ALT" you can also mark a region with the mouse and press "DEL" to cut it. You can copy with drag and drop.

Here are two quick ways to delete a section within a clip (i.e., not the beginning or end):
 
1. Select the track with the clip (if it is not already).
2. Click+drag in the timeline to define the region you want to cut.
3. Type ctrl+X.
 
Or as THambrecht suggests:
 
1. While holding Alt, click+drag across the region you want to cut.
2. This creates splits at the beginning and end of the region. Click on the region's clip "handle" to select it.
3. Hit the Del key.
 
I agree with the previous post that editing in SONAR is way faster than Audition...I know Audition very well, I wrote two of the "Classroom in a Book" books about Audition. Where Audition really shines is if you're using it to edit soundtracks in Premiere.
 
I am curious why as a relative newcomer to SONAR you're using X1, it's pretty old. At least make sure you install the updates for it. AFAIC the current version is waaaaay ahead of X1 in many ways.

If you want to extend an existing highlighted selection, hold down Shift and click in the bottom half of the Time Ruler, left or right from the already selected area, depending on whether you want to extend the start or the end of the selection.
Click inside the selection to shorten it.

Double-click an audio clip opens Loop Construction View per default.
To change this to "Nothing" or "Clip Properties":
Track View: Options>Click Behavior>Double-Click>Audio Clips
 

Thank you everyone! All answers were very helpful. Now if only Sonar will stop crashing when it tries to load saved projects, that would be awesome :)

Sounds like it could be a plug-in issue. Open SONAR in Safe Mode, select no plug-ins, and see if the project loads. If so, then selectively enable different plug-ins on startup while in Safe Mode to see if one causes the problem. Then, check for a) updates to the plug-in and/or b) issues involving using 32-bit plug-ins in a 64-bit system (assuming you're running a 64-bit OS and version of SONAR).

Thanks Craig, I tried opening in Safe Mode to no avail, so I ended up starting a new project and importing all the raw wav files and then saved that new project as a different name.
 
I then added a midi track to the project and saved that as a different name (but with no VST's) and so far, that's working.
 
Having said that - I have another issue - this time with midi playback volume - so, I'll open a new thread and would really appreciate any insight into solving the issue.
